apologies sir!

The main point isn't around the tapping up/reaching out to the player here.

The issue is Spurs have somehow offered the exact amount of the release clause - which is a.) confidential unless there is permission to disclose by the club and b.) a lot less than he's realistically worth.

So Spurs have somehow (i.e. through his agent or the player himself) been made aware of the release clause value without any contact with the club.

Added to that, a medical has been scheduled less than 24 hours later....all without the club knowing anything about it. If someone can't see how that's not within the rules, I don't really know what to say.

The agent will have told the club the release clause

Have any clubs been Fined for it ?

No because technically it’s not against the rules for an agent to talk to other clubs and the club to talk to agents et.

Strangely enough, yes, Liverpool were fined in 2002 for an illegal approach made to Christian Zeige, contracted at Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough were also given leave by the High Court to sue Liverpool over the value of the transfer.

Zeige’s head had been turned and he also pushed for the transfer to go through. Middlesbrough got £5.5m for a player valued at £8m, and it is the difference, £2.5m, that Liverpool were sued for.

There’d been meetings between Rick Parry, Houllier and the player’s agent and accompanied by Zeige at subsequent meetings, all without Boro’s knowledge.

And that’s where is crosses into the illegal approach etc

Same when the club met with VVD without permission

Tapping up has gone on ever since transfers between clubs became possible.

A dear friend of mine, sadly no longer with us, was, together with a team mate, approached at an end of season do for his club by the manager of another club now one of the biggest clubs in the world but then on the rise.

And that was in 1961.

Yes it was VVD I was thinking of.

But given all clubs do this how come so few fines ?

Southampton didnt go through with the complaint and we ended up giving them a bit more for the player

If a club carries out an illegal approach the other club files a complaint then the club is punished

But clubs don’t need to involve the player directly anymore - just speak to the agents

Probably seen some potential for him to play off the left and create width. Does seem a bit of a weird move though signing a player to play out of position as there's no way he's taking the RW spot off Saka.
Might be Saka is suffering some sort of long term injury so they need back up and to rest him.

I think Saka is fine but he probably watched Madueke play well for England off the left and has tried to be clever, ala the Havertz signing.

Arteta must be under real pressure to win the title or CL this season though, he's got to deliver the goods and there can be no excuses.

A very fitting tribute indeed.
Thats not all they have done.
Liverpool have now said they terminated his contract before he died. By doing so, they are able to pay his full contract earnings out to his wife and family. (Apparently FIFA regulations prohibit a contract being paid out in the event of a player dieing whilst under contract.) They have also said they will pay for his 3 childrens education.
