Managers at that level watch football on tap. They know all of the players out there, will be watching clips of action put together by their scouting team whenever required. Ten Haag will know exactly what players are out there, who he wants, who will fit his plan. To thing he doesn't is just bizarre imo. Same for all managers at top clubs. He doesn't manage in glorious isolation.

Why would clubs at that level have scouts then, a chief scout and a team below them?????

I watch football on tap, but I'd be rubbish at selecting players.

I doubt the Brighton managers are the ones who are in control of all the players they bring in?

Scouts watch players live ,you can’t do it on TV.

Well, maybe if it was Hojlund in his own box, they'd give a penalty for it. We just don't know anymore.

It's a pyramid with the manager at the top, it might be the director of football but personally I'd want it to be the guy picking the team. Information gets fed up through the pyramid. The manager isn't out watching different levels constantly but the network will be so that when the manager asks for options for a position they have a list available. He will be fed clips if it's a player they aren't familiar with.

At the same time, managers will be watching games on tape, or whatever the equivalent is now, to see players, what other coaches are doing etc pretty constantly. If you see interviews with managers, interview those around them, they eat, sleep and drink football. They are obsessed.

Yes if that’s Hojlund or Nunez instead of Gabriel we would want to know how he missed that header.

PL defenders don’t miss balls like that ( I’m in the CBS union though bit biased) unless there is a reason.

Yes all that is true.
But to see a player properly you need to be there.
On tv you can’t see his movement off the ball, positioning sense etc.
But all media is used these days.

But given all this how come some teams have spent a fortune on some donkeys?

When he took over, Utd were a shambles. Really really bad. Despite having no proper striker all season, he still managed to get Utd to 3rd in the league, won the EFL Cup, final of FA Cup and was looking good in Europe until the crazy game that put us put, as the team still showed that weak spot at times.

It wasn't bad at all. And players like Martinez and Casemiro that came in were heaped with praise.

This season, things have been bad. It was clear club were happy to sell Maguire, wanted to, expected to and everyone else seemed to feel it was a good idea. Changed captaincy. Then Maguire decided to stay anyway, the whole first choice defence got injured, bought players arrived injured, Sancho is obviously hard work, Antony got arrested, players lost form. A lot of that is beyond Ten Hag's control, just been a complete mess. Thankfully Maguire did actually stay in end, and a master stroke they signed Evans.

But 2 to 3 months of a season, it is a joke to just write him off after a good 1st season. I'm sure he has made mistakes, but all managers do.

But we'll never win, same at other clubs I guess. Keep a manager after a bad spell and club are a joke for keeping a bad manager. Get rid of manager after 2 or 3 seasons, club are a joke for not giving them more time.

Great question, it's a mystery at times

With some players, there is an element of gamble, the manager hopes they can add 10-20% , sometimes they can, sometimes they can't. And then there is Havertz

Kane would have scored 60 for City, and set up about 40

In my opinion, he is the best all round striker in the world by a mile. England having both him and Bellingham is a treat, plus several other top class players

Yes, they've had some injuries so far this season, but they have been abysmal every time I've watched them play. I used to love watching Utd play as you would know that they would play an expansive and attacking style. For the last 5 or 6 years (or possibly even longer) they've been unbelievably poor despite throwing bucket loads of cash at their team. I'm not trying to blame Ten Hag as it seems the problems run so much deeper than that but to watch them and not even be able to identify what they're trying to do is poor.

Yeah, they have been a shambles so far this year. And lots of factors in play. The manager is probably the least of their worries.

Everyone knows the club is a circus. I think it is fair to say that, if Utd went out and just got one of the best managers in the world agreed by most people, they wouldn't suddenly become world beaters, or at least right up there competing with best. If anyone did think that, then maybe Utd are a lot stronger as a club than I thought, and all we need is a new manager, who can scout all the best players, to come in and do the business.
