The 320 Club

Following 4 weeks of training to swing the club faster, I joined the 320 Yard Club today with a 312, 315 and than a 320 yard drive (all middle). Another slightly off line hit a bunker at 280. Seeing the ball fly down the middle of the fairway as if rocket propelled was the most enjoyable time of my golfing career (nearly one year) - absolutely amazing.

The bad news is that a couple of days ago I hit my Swing Speed Radar and Tempo Timer with the club, breaking the LCD. However, Al Dilz at Sports Sensors Inc will be sending my a replacement part. Many thanks to him for that.

And lastly, my best Drives were all 'nearly 300yds'......until I got a Garmin S1 Golf GPS Watch, and found they were actually only 260/270. :-(

aint that the truth. Because im one of the bigger hitters in our group we have always guessed my drives, normally by simple means of yellow tee box, take away approach shot distance... usually about 280-300 ish. Over christmas i played on a cold morning and hit an absolute peach slightly downhill on a part frosted fariway. GPS tracked it with an app on my iphone - 240 yards. Gutted :(

to many things factor on length, wind, bounce, roll, ball compression, temps, humidity.

I hit what I thought was a sunday best the other day, we were pratting about so I hit my 3 wood afterwards off the deck. When I got to the rough to pick up the 3 wood ball I looked over to see my drive was actually behind me :o

I am a fan of Tim's posts to be honest. They are certainly entertaining and looking at the number of reads and replies its gotta be up there of the all time highest hasn't it?

What I can not quite get is are they a complete wind up or 100% genuine - probably somewhere between the 2 as all good wind ups are.

Anyone else noticed that the name 'TimGolfy' has a noted resemblance to a rival mag TG or am I paranoid. Maybe Tim is an interloper - whichever it is I am looking forward to the next installment :D

I did have a mate who worked abroad all week and filled his time spamming on an angling forum and winding people up - he is a good angler himself but just enjoyed having a poke at people who took it too seriously - its not you is it Rich??

Having read all of these posts about the inaccuracy of goole earth I got really worried. Reason being that a few weeks ago I plotted out an entire course yardage book for my club using google earth for the measurements!!

So, today I went down there for some practice and decided to try and verify some of the distances with my laser range finder. Every distance I measured was no more than 1 yard off from the distances in my book... Thanks god as that thing took me hours!!

Not saying that it is always this accurate (though cant see any reason why it wouldnt be...) but at my course anyways the distances from the "ruler" in google earth are spot on.

The Google earth ruler itself is not inaccurate, as the mapping is quite high quality.

The inaccuracy comes from trying to guess where exactly the tee and ball position are.

Measuring to a fixed object that you can see on the map is easy, but trying to guess where an object not marked on the map is relative to other fixed objects and convert that from the viewpoint a person has to a plan view is not very accurate.

Yeah thats true I suppose. All of my measurements were from the front of tees to bunkers, trees etc. which are obviously fixed, but yeah guessing where you hit a ball on a hole would be very difficult to do accurately!

Some people earlier in the thread were questioning the actual accuracy of google earth itself though I do believe...

UPDATE: Should read 340 club (wind assisted).

(260 into wind, 340 with the wind - exact opposite directions).

80 yard wind mmmmmmmmmmm better get to higher ground for when the Tsunami comes through!

Chris

Tim,

Wind assisted ones don't really count.

I drove into the bunker at the front of our 356 yard 7th hole the other week with a howling gale behind me, followed by driving into the pond 15 yards shy of our 400 odd yard 9th.

I never get anywhere near on a normal day and were too long really given where the little white thing ended up!!

Edit: Obviously the ground was rock hard aswell, meant to add that.

Rubbish! La la la la la la la la :D

Taken from the PGA STats website, for 2011 PGA Driving Distance:
"The average number of yards per measured drive. These drives are measured on two holes per round. Care is taken to select two holes which face in opposite directions to counteract the effect of wind. Drives are measured to the point at which they come to rest regardless of whether they are in the fairway or not."

An average of those two drives is 300 yards, which puts me 8th on the PGA Stats , four places ahead of Phil Mickelson.

four places ahead of Phil Mickelson.

That's really gonna bug me when I go to St Georges and pay to see Big Phil and realise that the 8th best driver on the PGA tour hasn't made the draw!

It's just a pity that most forum users won't see this wonderful achievement because the default sort order of the forum (by thread created date) means this thread is listed on on page 28.

Id imagine those stats include a number of 3 woods from the tee though tim, aswell as not giving it the beans.

Not doubting you're a long hitter, just worth bearing in mind. Phil is one of the longest when he is going for it with the driver.

Tim, what's your handicap?
