Jim Furyk will take the reins from Davis Love with Love appointed as a vice captain.

Furyk wants to try and make the team as a player as well, not sure about that, as a big job.

Thoughts?

Good appointment and having Love's experience to feed off will help. Don't think in this day and age playing and captaining is a realistic aim as something will have to give once the golf starts. Too much to do on and off the course

Steely character who will be as prepared as Davis Love but not as sociable. Can't imagin him and Bjorn sharing a beer before the event and playing nice.

Would have preferred Couples as he would have been easier to beat.

Good choice IMO, not sure I'd be comfortable having the previous winning captain there as a vice though....a bit like having Fergie as assistant manager at Manchester United

Up to a point I agree with that, but you have to think it's a good move to use the experience, especially as a winning captain and I think it's protocol (for the US at least) to give him a VC title

Clearly they feel the Love factor will benefit them again. If I was Furyk I would be forgetting all aspirations of making the team. Im not saying he cant do it and in recent times no one has done or been able to achieve it. The captains job is huge now since the RC has become one of biggest sporting events in the world and I would be wanting to focus all of his efforts on retaining it if I was on the USGA RC committee. The amount of media committments would make it extremely difficult for him to make the side. Also. they seem have a huge crop of young talent making a big impact who are going to be knocking on the door.

It's easy to forget that Love captained a US team to defeat and that the much maligned Tom Watson captained a US team to victory.

With Europe's current selection process USA will always have an advantage.

Thankfully we got Clarke out of the way and he'll go down in history as a bigger failure than Sir Faldo. Not even touching on his Westwood selection his pairings were questionable at best. Hopefully lessons have been learned.

Jim Furyk is a sensible appointment, a highly respected player and I'm sure he'll do well.

If Furyk makes the team that will be great for Europe. 2 wins from 9 as a player, that's the kind of guy we want to play against.

Comes across as a very decent person, should have the respect of his players. Sound appointment by the US. Perhaps they are getting the hang of this now.

Didn't take long for Westwood to be mention from you craw

But I'm a bit confused about the statement the USA will always have the advantage? Have you seen the last 8 Ryder Cup results - 6 wins for Europe

Doesn't seem that USA have an advantage

Furyk is a good appointment for Europe - he is a multiple loser in the Ryder Cup

Shift in power is now well and truly with the US Tour. European Tour is just a feeder for the top players to ply their trade prior to heading over the pond.

The ET has been a feeder tour for the Top European Players for over a decade now

The top players are still ET members and still play in the Ryder Cup for Europe - only one player missed out , Casey but he hasn't played RC since 2008.

If the US go on a run of 3 in a row - just like Europe have done over the past 20 years then that would point to a power shift - right now the RC is with the US - when it comes to 2018 there is nothing to suggest they will win it again ( having not won in Europe since 1993 ! )

I agree with LP. The US could not have set the last course up to be any more US friendly, as is their right. Surely in France we will allow the rough to grow in and other options to restrict the bombing and wild US golfers. They may still win but at least we will make it harder for them this time.

It's a myth was set up the european courses with long rough to stop the US. We don't - a lot of our guys hit it just as far as their american counterparts and they all play the same courses week in, week out anyway.

We would handicap our team as much as theirs.

I'm not sure any of our guys are quite as wild off the tee as some of the US blokes. I'm not suggesting we go all Carnoustie but some genuine rough will mess with quite a few of the US players who really received no punishment for some wild shots.

Oh I think our guys are no better than theirs to be honest from Rory downwards.

The next venue is in effect a resort course with little rough and hardly any trees - I bet they won't grow the rough because they want a birdie-fest for the crowds and TV. Belfrey, Valderama, K Club, Celtic Manor, Gleneagles - no rough and we won them all.

Big job? Pick part of a team, pick the order they go out in, that is basically the job

I think we need to set it up in whatever manner gives us an edge. If that's growing rough fine, if not, find another way. However with most of the next side likely to be playing regularly in the US anyway will they actually benefit themselves? It's something for Bjorn to consider seriously
