Our club texas scramble is this weekend. So i need the rules to be right it my head.

Everyone plays a tee shot (Each persons tee shot as to be choosen at least 4 times)
The captain of the team then chooses which ball to play from, everybody then plays their shot within 6 inches of the choosen ball but no near the hole.
Everyone plays their shot, then the captain chooses the shots to play from until the ball is sunk, including on the green

Is that right? :D

Usually the player who's ball is chosen plays first and plays as it lies. The other three place within 6 inches. On the green you putt from the same place. If teams of 3 are allowed then they usually have to get 5 tee shots in each. We play 1/8th combined for teams of four and 1/6th for team of three.

Never had the Captain picking the shot, generally it's consensus taking into account how well everyone is doing with their tee shots. If someone is struggling then a shorter drive but in the fairway is sometimes the one to take

You do need a team captain to have the final say. Have played many and there are different ways of doing things so it's best left to one of the group to pick shots imo. Of course he should listen to opinions but in the end one person needs to decide.
If everyone gets involved with picking shots it can get a bit nitpicky and heated. Poorer players often want their 4 tee shots used as soon as possible which doesn't help the team score.

Yeah, usually lowest handicapper is the captain in such events and chooses which ball to play. Can get quite tactical if someone's having a mare off the tee.

I don't often play the format. My pairs partner teamed up with 3 big-hitting lads to play and did quite well. It occurred to me that the "must use 4 drives" thing might take some working out. In my case, I expect I'd be keen to see my drives taken on the short holes where they all hit irons and I hit a fairway wood. I can't see my best drives on the long holes being much use....unless everyone else is in the cabbage.

The thing about each player having to have 4 tee shots taken can put a lot of pressure on unless they are taken early on.

In one event I played, I did hear a rumour that one member of a particular 4 ball was playing so badly that coming up to the 18th he still had 1 tee shot to count. Imagine the pressure - a high h/capper, playing badly, knowing that wherever he hit his ball the rest of the team would have to play from there.

He did the only sensible thing...... an air shot

All 4 team members then played 2 off the tee.

Just a rumour I hasten to add. Wouldn't want Smiffy to think that I was spilling the beans....... :p

Pretty much sums it up. The thing I'll add is if you putt first and miss don't casually hole out as it'll count and so any other eagle, birdie or par putts won't score as the hole is deemed to be completed

And another common rule, if the ball selected is in teh rough or in a bunker, then the other players must DROP their balls - not place them.

Some forms of the game don't allow the person whose ball has been selected to play one of the next shots. This is because a team with a very low hanidcapper usually ends up making all of the shots after the tee shots, so it evens teams up more

Played the round today. What a enjoyable round that was. We shot a fairly decent 68gross and with our combined handicap took us down to 58. Winners will apparently to be coming in with 53-55.

Todays round really does remind me why I play golf. The golf may not have been earth shattering, but the banter really lifted the mood and bad shots where soon forgotten.

Looking forward to next weeks millennium scramble now.
