Tennis match fixing!

It would appear that authorities are looking into suspected match fixing in tennis (including Wimbledon) with a possible Grand Slam winner being one - is any sport not infected by cheats?
 
Tennis is very open to fixing, spot fixing in particular. Double fault on the third point of the second game anyone? Not likely with the really big boys but for the journeymen players it has to be a possibility. Particularly as there are so many meaningless tournaments played all year round. Very sad but naieve if people thing it has not been happening. Even more open as you don't have to persuade a team or two or three in a team to fix something, you just need to corrupt one player.

I hope it is just minor players involved. I don't find tennis interesting but this impacts on all sports as you start questioning everyone and that takes the fun out of things.
 
Any sport where you can place a bet will be open to some form of fixing and cheating.

Not sure that many sports are now 'infected' by cheats, depending on what the definition of infected is I suppose. But I would be very surprised if there is any professional sport in which you can bet on, in which a professional has not cheated at some time to ensure a certain outcome. Or taken performance enhancing drugs to gain an advantage. Including golf.

Golf one of the least likely sports to be affected from people "throwing it" for betting purposes as its almost impossible to win enough from someone losing at golf to make it worthwhile comparative to the prize money available. The same cant be said about tennis, cricket, football, darts, snooker etc etc where it is much easier to "win" large chunks of money from relatively small passages of playing badly compared to the reward within the sport (and doesnt even have to affect the end result of the match)

Premier League is not infected, maybe paying the prima donnas too much is the way to avoid it😃

I wouldn't be so confident about premier league being infected - every chance that at some point someone has missed a pen on purpose or given away a pen on purpose or missed a chance etc etc

Upto now nothing in the papers, media etc so therefore currently clean, probably one of the few clean sports left.

You just appeared to be stating there was nothing to suggest anything wrong with football and one of the few clean sports ?

I just told you about a few guys in the sport who have been arrested etc.

Because all those you quoted to prove a point only boateng was actually done and that was for a non-league team, I was answering Chrisd and stated PL, was having a bit of banter as PL footballers get slagged off all the time on here, so I don't wish to get in to a debate with you or anyone else whether my fun comment was accurate or not, I'll chill out, you crack on.
 
Back to it topic.....TENNIS match fixing...

A work colleague's brother (an ex Scotland Yard Organised Crime specialist) is heavily involved with the TIU. It's not entire matches that seem to be the main area of concern, but events within those matches.

And it's not just players that they are looking at. Officials may be involved and there may even be folk in the crowds providing info ahead of the slightly delayed feeds.

As already posted, wherever there is betting, there is potential for corruption. In many ways, it's the betting companies own fault - for providing the sort of 'spot' betting that allows seemingly trivial events to be used/abused! That's not to condone offenders actions, but the sums involved appear to be large enough to be a huge temptation to struggling sports folk!

There is no question that there are people courtsiding and providing info to those at home betting ahead of tv pictures, happens in every sport pretty much and has been for 10 years (since Betfair made it worthwhile doing so). This is completely and utterly different to corruption and players losing matches or parts of matches deliberately. For years the authorities in several sports have focussed on stopping courtsiders, bracketing them into matchfixing when they are nothing of the sort rather than actually being prepared to deal with those within the sport who are deliberately underperforming and therefore fixing outcomes of all or parts of matches and compromising the integrity of the sport.

Courtsiding allows the individuals to make money at the expense of people betting at home on the tv pictures (if they arent aware that live is often 15 seconds behind in reality) but doesnt impact on the outcome of the game or have any effect on the sport apart from a betting angle
