played this morning and it was minging! bit of snow on the ground so we played on temporary greens. it took a lot away from the game but we still had to pay full green fees, i think they should reduce them, any thoughts on that?

I also just read about longest drives and all the squabling, what a joke! anyway, I hit a tee shot once and it hit a small tree 20yds in front to the left a bit and it flew back really high and soft and my mate who was stood behind me caught it! - 15yds, beat that!

temporary greens arent the nicest.. but at the end of the day, you're out there to have fun.

You got to accept the fact your course isnt playing how you like and just make the most of it, dont worry bout the tees being to far back, just treat it as a learning curve, you'll have to hit shots and youll end up in areas you never been before, its all just gonna add to your experience and improve you.

When the conditions are near perfect you will be more then equip for a good round!

sorry mate didnt realise you were paying green fees for yuor round i should of read it properly!! i was looking at it form a point of view as it being your home club!

In that case yes temporary greens aren't the experience that you are paying a full fee for!

Played a society day yesterday on a pay and play where I have been before and which I thought would be pretty ropey given a) the volume of traffic they have, b) the wet weather lately. I have to say the course was surprisingly dry underfoot (no muddy trousers) and we were on proper greens all the way round. They even putted ok. The only work being done seemed to be to a relatively large number of bunkers which had a white fleece like thing on and were marked as GUR.

Well done to Birds Hill for having the course in decent nick. Still not a favourite of mine and there are better pay and plays but in the cold and wind it was a good test.

Not a fan of temporary greens either, the abyss that is left for a hole, gimmes from alsorts of stupid distances and slow bumby greens.

However, the temporaries on my local are quite small greens and this makes for some really fun nearest the pin contests as you have such a small target (not the hole obviously) to aim for.

I guess paying full price is a pain in the ass but you have to make from the experience what you can.

I don't think anyone is a fan of temporary greens, but they can be a nesessary evil if we want to be playing half decent greens by the spring n some courses. A lot of courses this time of year charge winter rates & some don't. So if its winter rates you are paying then we can't really complain too much at winter greens or winter tees at various times over the winter season.

Often it is winter greens/tees, or close the course. Do we want to play? and can the course afford to close?

That said, charges should reflect the condition of the course. Winter course = reduced fees.

Oddly, in Florida, the hotter it gets, the cheaper the golf. Tee off after 12, and you are looking at cheap (although sticky) golf.

Odd this. I saw it mentioned in GM and wondered what everyone was on about. What's all this business about big holes on winter greens? On my course, the winter greens (which seem to be about the size of a postage stamp) have a regulation 4.25" hole in them. We are now up to 7 holes with winter greens, with the rest no doubt soon to follow.

Still, it's good short game practice as there's no point in putting anyway!

Hi

This is our 8th green in Jan this year and yes they were and always are in play!! And for that matter come the summer it was one of the best on the course.

The reason we play on them all year is one come the summer they are up there with the best and two it brings in a lot of green fee's in the winter and that way we dont need as many green fee's in the summer!

I came from playing at my old club in Oxford and thought they were mad to play through the winter but it works well.
