Sad new as Teigmouth GC was robbed a few weeks ago, two men made away with 100 years worth of trophies. No arrests yet, but I imagine they will have been melted down by now.

Very sad for the club, insurance money won't be able to bring back the history of that they have lost

We had all ours stolen a few years ago - there was a spate of break-ins in the area and Hindhead (I think) lost theirs soon after. All in the club were devastated - but tbh at our AGM/Presentation evening a couple of months back when the replacement (copied) trophies were presented, the thought that they weren’t the originals didn’t cross my mind.

I'm sure I read at the time that the Silver Frigate would cost £30k(?) to replace due to the intricate workmanship.

I don't know exactly what Teignmouth lost, but do remeber they had a sword made by Wilkinson Swords that was very old, not sure how easy that would be to replace

We had it well insured. I don’t know how much it cost to replace. A Birmingham silversmith was able to build a precise replica as we had it well documented and photographed. It is locked up in a very secure cabinet/safe.

We ended up moving ours to a secure location in the clubhouse given the spate of break ins. Didn't stop the pro shop getting done a year or so back but it would take a concerted effort to locate and extricate the trophies. Nothing is ever 100% but feels safer

Don’t know how much it cost to replace but we had it well insured. A Birmingham silversmith was able to make a very close replica of it as we had it extensively documented and photographed. Yes…it’s very intricate and though it’s still in the clubhouse it’s in a very secure armoured glass case that has been built into the wall as part of our clubhouse refurbishment.

Sad story, especially I have played Teigmouth a few times.

Perhaps controversially though, would members and in particular those who win competitions, be overly concerned that the trophy is a replica (or even no trophy at all)?

The trophies offer a presentation photo opportunity, after which they get put away in the club house. I think most winners consider the prestige of having their name on a clubhouse board to be enough.

I get the history attached to trophies but is that an outdated concept? I have played other sports where clubs have ditched trophies altogether as no one wanted to win them and take them home to clean!

Ours stay in the clubhouse. The display cabinet is a nice focal attraction so I think they are important.

We get our picture taken with the trophy on presentation night and then all taken back by the club. We decided the display cabinet was too much of a temptation and while it was a point of interest to visitors we decided the risk was too high and moved them to a different location in the club

Yep our trophies got stolen 10+ years ago - before I had joined.

I don’t think any were of substantial value, but plenty made of solid silver. I agree with the above, they have significant sentimental value but not from the perspective of replacing them, or melting them down for the metals! I believe clubs are insured for that kind of thing.

Blackmoor got raided more recently, probably 2 years ago?

Our steward lives in accommodation at the rear of the clubhouse so in the event of a break-in we have someone onsite which is a good deterrent.

Based upon our experience I am afraid that someone being on site is not an effective deterrent.

Neither is CCTV, security grilles or code controlled barriers.

Both our trophy cabinet and pro shop have been targeted in recent years.
