Played yesterday, and when I got home and cleaned my clubs, I noticed there was a piece of tee stuck under one of the adjustable weights on the bottom of my driver. Does this count as altering the club characteristics during play, and if so what would the penalty be?

It is good to get questions like this which show a wish to get things right and to play an honest game. As said above, nothing here to be concerned about. If anything, it is damage to the club that happened during your round, in which case the club is taken to be conforming for the rest of that round. See Rule 4.1a(2), second paragraph.

Changing playing characteristics has to be deliberate to lead to a breach if the club is used. See Rule 4.1a(3)

All i can say is in the old days, you would retire to your study or Library, write your last wishes and then blow your Brains out with the revolver in your desk draw... its the decent thing after all;)

Nowadays, I think we should allow him a glass of whisky as well before blowing his brains out, but you're right we should do what is right.

Does mud, sand, grass, squirrel *** stuck to your club face during a round count as altering my club face characteristics?
This is a bit like "You've got a big lump of crap on the end of your club" and when your opponent examines the club face you say "Not that end."
