We have an online tee booking system at our place, which works really well.

Now normally, since joining, I have been playing in the same 3 ball. But my normal playing partners are on holiday for a couple of weeks.

Now looking on the online booking system for the monthly medal this weekend, I see there are few slots with 2 balls in (3 ball limit). Would you consider it ok to just add you name to one of these, or would it be proper to contact one of the members first to see if they minded/already had possible third players waiting to confirm?

I'm new to this "being a new guy" thing so not really sure about rolling up on someone elses Saturday morning game.

If I haven't put my name down first to allow others to join me, I think nothing of adding my name to any 2 ball to make it up to full compliment.

You get to meet and play with other members which I think is a good thing.

No need to contact anyone, introduce yourself on the tee and hopefully find out a bit more whilst playing your round.

That's how new friendships and future partnerships are formed.

Bounce games I would contact the players first, you never know the circumstances and best to be invited once you ask rather than have any awkwardness on the 1st tee as you walk on to join them.

Medal then just add your name

I do this in all of our weekly comps, have only played with the same people a couple of times. as people say great way to meet new people and no group I have joined have had any issues with it everyones been really friendly

We have one of these god damn bloody awful online booking systems (but that's another argument) and it is perfectly OK to stick your name down with 2 others. At my place, if people don't want others to join them, which is actually pretty rare, they tend to block the last space out as a visitor/guest booking.

It's true. He didn't. :)

Medals at our place are arranged by the club. So you put your name on the sheet in one of three timeslots, and they then sort the groups. If I've not entered, I just rock up on the day and they pair me up.

If ths was to be done on-line, I'd simply add myself where there was a gap.

However, if it's just a friendly knock day, I'd check with the member(s) first. I'd probably put my name down, just to keep the space, and then delete it if they decline.

We have the same thing at ours, just put your name in a gap. I did this for the first year at mine which is how I met the guys I play with every week. One thing I do before though is check their hcps on the website just to make sure I'm not joining a couple of single figure guys and embarrass myself!

Also not a big fan of people putting in guests etc if no one is joining them. I had this problem in winter months as playing on my own I struggled to get a slot as people were filling the spaces with fictions people and with limited day light hours struggled to get a full 18 holes. After a word with the sectary this has now been resolved.

Get your name down and meet some new partners I do it all comps at the minute still a newbie and so far haven't failed to meet friendly amicable partners.
Far better take a chance rather than miss out on a round? :)
