Hall of Famer
I went along to the TM demo day this afternoon straight from a really strong practice session at another range so arrived knowing I was loose and swinging well. Had to wait 15 minutes or so for my turn on the launch monitor so tried out a few Burner 3 woods and as promised looked at the tour preferred and the TP MB irons.
I was surprised how easy and well I hit the 6 iron int he tour preferred in a steel R300 shaft which flew a bit lower than my tour burner but a few yards longer. Sadly the TP MB irons were beyond the capabilities of a mortal like me and soon went back in the rack.
I was in the market for a new driver (and had my eye on a new hybrid). I went through my current specs and the guy gave me a burner 10.5 in a regular flex. This proved way to whippy for my swing speed (91.2 mph) and so we went to a stiffer flex. Although it is marked as a stiff it is not their stiffest S flex (if that makes sense) and I was hitting that pretty well and was getting an extra 103 yards compared with my Clevland with an equal dispertion pattern.
I tried the next stiffness of shaft but that proved too much so went back to the other one. I hit a few more with a good flight but with some left to right movement which may well have been the 20mph left to right wind but I think was also down to me. I did try the tour burner but in all flexes my spin rate was way up and the ball lflight was too low for it to be a viable option for me.
The guy then moved onto the hybrid. He got me to hit my 4 iron and a burner 3 hybrid (grapgite R flex) which were almost equal in all departments. He told me that there was little point in putting a burner 3 hybrid in my bag as it was so close to my. However he got me to hit a 15 degree 2 hybrid in an ordinary stiff shaft which I nailed 189 yards into the L-R wind with a bit of draw. This was 18 yards further than my Cobra 3 hybrid.
The guy was really good and we spent about 45 minutes looking at the driver and hybrid. However I have to say even after picking up the driver I had been fitted for and moving down to a spare bay, I wasn't totally happy with the way I was hitting it. The guy even had 10 minutes before his next appointment so we quickly went over the stats and I hit a few on the monitor again and I hit them solid and straight but something just didn't feel right.
Even though HID was there and had said I had the green light to buy them (AG were offering 10% of TM clubs and the manager said he'd give me another 5% as a reward for my loyalty over the last 12 months) I just couldn't bring myself to buy the driver.
I might have a think about the hybrid but as I hit my 5 wood so well and probably just as far it does seem that I am probably better off sticking with the gear I have for the moment. I may well put the Cally 11 degree Big Bertha 460 back in my bag as it has a neutral face and gives me greater carry especially as it is so wet at the moment.
It was a great way of killing a 90 minutes and was good to see my figures on the monitor (although I wish I had written them all down).
