Hi,

One of my friends has organised a golf weekend away in Portugal in November, Ryanair had a deal on for November and December to take clubs for free on the plane which is good. However seeing how they treat normal luggage I was wondering on recommendations for a protective case or alike to take the clubs in... hopefully something that won't break the bank?

Any advise?

normal golf travel bags are absolutely fine, just pad your clubs with towels and some clothing and make sure you have a padlock on it- hard back ones are good but I use a soft one with a 'spine', oh, make sure it has travel wheels like your luggage.

No point in padlocking luggage. If anyone wants they'll either steal the lot or use a Stanley knife and slash it. As far as Ryanair treating luggage badly, once you have checked the luggage in, the airline never touches your baggage. It is all dealt with by the baggage handlers who are independent (Normally Serviceair)

I have taken my clubs away a few times and I normally wrap the heads in face wash towells. Another thing I have done is stick all my luggage in the golf travel bag eg the cloths just create more padding.

Im flying out to Portugal for five days on Sunday. Didn't fancy paying £100+ for a travel bag so brought a Dunlop 1 for £26 from sportsdirect. First glance at it and it seems pretty robust and quite good value for money. For extra protection Im putting most of my clothes in the bag and will throw some bubble wrap between the clubs and make sure all the headcovers are firmly on.

I was sitting one a plane at Barcelona airport watching the last of the bags get loaded, the luggage handler saw I was watching as he picked up someones golf clubs, instead of placing them on to the conveyor, he launched the bag. One hand under the bottom of the bag, one hand steadying it, he tossed it about half way up the converyor caber style, they landed heads first and bounced.

If I ever have a golfing holiday abroad, I'll be purchasing a hard flight case, packing the clubs in bubble wrap, more than likely have the majority of my clothes packed into the bag pockets and making sure they are insured.

Soft case not a chance.

I have a Titleist travel bag, bought it with all my kit. It's a sturdy bit of gear and has the spine/wheels etc. I did what a lot have suggested here, and put clothes etc inbetween clubs.

Your best bet is to use a few cable ties too. put your wedges together with a cable tie around the grips, and just above the hosel to keep them as one super - wedge. Do the same for your irons/hybrids/woods and driver - it creates more strength if the bag finds itself up-ended for some reason.

however it will be obvious when you collect it on the carousel and can alert staff and make a valid claim, try claiming when you open it up in your hotel room and find your expensive Driver or wedge or Scotty putter is missing because someone just unzipped it, nicked it, zipped up again.
trust me I've been there and if its not locked you deserve all you get

Travelling next week and im worried about my Driver as its the longest, they are in single dividers so the rest should be ok , will be in travel bag & locked . gona drop a couple of clubs out to make sure it under the weight as ye know what ryanair are like if its not ..

Someone suggested above putting a broom rod in with the woods, I always do this and then wrap a towel round the woods and the rod. The rod then should take most of the pressure.

I have taken my clubs all round the world in the last 15 years and, to date, have not had a problem with broken clubs - they have gone "missing" but usually turned up the next day.

I use a "cloth" bag (Club Glove) and always put a "broom handle" that was 1-2 inches longer than the driver in the bag. Club heads are also wrapped in towels.

be sure to read the terms & conditions. some airlines define what is a golfbag. i.e. for KLM it is a golfbag with max 14 clubs, a dozen balls, glove, tees and a pair of shoes. if you put any additional things in it you will be charged excess baggage.

In 12 years of travel (probably upward of a dozen trips,) I have used the same Ben Hogan travel bag which is of a soft material, and I have never had an issue with anything going missing or anything breaking.

Also always have 2 bags in the one and have never been pulled up on it.

we are going with easyjet and get a 30kg limit. It is stated that only clubs and sporting equipment is to be put in the travel bag.......yeah right!!!!!
