Take lessons or not?

Take the lesson !!! but make sure they are booked (at least 5 if you are just starting off, and you will have time to practice what you are taught before the next lesson.
This should get you the fundamentals, and then all you have to do is get a regular MOT type lesson say March / April and July August to make sure bad habbits are ironed out.
Good luck with the lessons and enjoy.

Interesting topic, at the end of the day you get out of golf what you put in, mainly on the practise range.

I doubt lessons ever do any harm, but to say that they are essential is not true.

When starting out get thte basics right, grip, stance alignment. Then spend the next few months hitting 1000's of balls, this will help grove a swing.

You can get very good info from golf books, spend many hours chipping to targets, and many hours on the putting green again get advice from a book.

It can be done without lessons.

Usually at some stage some lessons will help.

When you are practicing always hit to a target even with the driver.

My brother plays off 5 and he's never had a lesson in his life.

I play off 13 and most of what I know came from him.

A low handicapper mate is probably not a bad substitute for a club house pro, you can learn a lot from just watching and picking up tips from better players.
