Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

If Tim/ Jim was a pup then I'd say learn to hit it full pelt, as hard and as far as you possibly can, then look at keeping the ball on the planet thereafter.

For a 40 year old or whatever he is, put your "better than average" :D ball striking to use and keep the ball in play under control. If that means 270/ 260/ 250 or whatever you will score much better.

Unless you just want to be regarded as "The big man" then carry on smashing it, whatever floats your boat. They will love your stories in the bar of when you out hit your opponent by 50yds+ all day but still fell to a 5&4 loss.

Why has everyone jumped to the conclusions that I'm rubbish with the irons? I've not mentioned my iron play once on this thread, but because I say I want to hit the ball long I'm been labelled "The Big Man" who is rubbish at putting and chipping and iron play, who is too old, will never break double digits, a liar. I probably caused England to lose against Bangladesh today too. And all I said was that I wanted to hit the ball further and increase my swing speed to match that of the pros.

Oh well, I guess it's human nature.

Not read all of this post but I feel like quite a fast striker of the ball but you can alot of the pro swing so effortlessly that swing speed cannot really be the key to hitting further/playing like a pro.

I'm strongly of the opinion that if a youngster play golf alot then while their body is growing the key areas in there body, ie core, are stronger in proportion to other muscle groups.

Core, core and more core is the key to an orthodix swing in my opinion. That and some decent lats!

I think most people have just been highlighting what they consider more important which is irons, short game, and putting rather than adding 20-30 yards to a drive.

As for the "big man" comment you have kinda come across like that in some of your posts.

i can hit the drives of 300 yards myself but i would love to take 50 yard off every time to be a better short game player an putter its not all about been long off the tee as it proves in the pro game the longest hitter dont alway win

You said yourself it was about ego to be fair mate.

I dont care how far anyone can hit the ball but you seem to be of the opinion that we're all missing the point and should be trying to hit a drive further.

There's also a time vs visible progress to consider. I dont know how long it would take to bulk up or increase swing speed but if someone spends a couple of hours a week chipping say, then the results tend to be better quicker and much easier to quantify on the course.

Whilst i may not agree with your approach to lowering your handicap it is entirely up to you. However you seem to want everyone to conform to your idea of drivibg it further?

I am really glad this thread started.

Only because I got to read the line - 'I'm one of the biggest hitters at my driving range'

awesome line.

:D thats the one I had in mind :D

I have been going to my range for two years and would not have the first clue who is the longest but I know for sure it's not me.

I was ay my local range a couple of weeks ago and there was a group of teenagers from the Darren Clarke school of golf doing a training session. Quite a few of them were hitting the ball to the very back of the range, not one of them looked like they were swinging particularly fast. All rythm as far as I could see.

I know its not me, but thats not what I'm there for. :D
I enjoyed this line as well swinger, I think it says it all about the experience of the thread originator of our conundrum of a game. Bet he wears white trousers as well :D :D

This is the bit you seem to be missing, if you have good technique you won't find hitting a 5i to a green any harder than hitting a wedge.

That's not at all true. We all know that the greater the loft of the club the greater the control.

Oh I see, we're talking about control now are we, I thought we were talking about hitting greens, there's a fundamental difference. To have control you need to hit the ball properly and you need to control your distance and when we're talking about controlling distance, we're not talking about swinging as hard as you can, that's the last thing you need.

This thread has certainly turned into a comedy festival.

All I can say is, this piece of kit is probably the best £109 I've ever spent on golf. I previously thought I was swinging fast but was somehow compromised by poor contact preventing the ball travelling as far as I wanted. Now I know the lack of distance is caused by a lack of club head speed (both irons and driver). I can now tailor my swing to incorporate speed, instead of hoping that it magically appears at some time in the future.

For anyone who hasn't tried, I would recommend you give it a go and see how different it is swinging at 110 compared to sub 90.

Enjoy!

How is this unit calibrated and to what standards?

I watch European tour golf live at least twice a year and very few of the player appear to swing as fast as most of the amateurs I see. The speed comes in, through the strike and the quickness of the hands with good body movement and lag. They also have a very solid sound through impact that few amateurs seem to get.

For me, at our level, its about being long enough off the tee to be comfortable with whatever you need to get to the green, not how fast you can swing! There is so much to learn to put together a reasonable round and I have yet to meet a player without a formal handicap who can consistanly hit fairways with any distance and I really dont believe that anyone can hit 80% of fairways unless they are single figure players - I did it on my Wednesday round this week but I consider that a really unusual occurance.

I also think that getting off the tee well is the thing to work on first when new to golf as your short game is of little use if you take 8 to get to the green but ultimately majoring on try to attain an unachievable distane with any club is fruitless

IMHO it started as a comedy festival. Good luck to you with your swing speed, frankly I don't care what mine is, it's of no concern to me and I've played golf long enough to know that an extra 50yds isn't going to make me a scratch golfer in the same way it isn't going to make you one.

Good luck all the same
