Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

geez you must be the purest ball striker id ever meet if with a swing speed in the low 90s if you AVERAGE 250 yds

I was on the course the other day for a practice round, taking multiple shots. On one hole into the wind two shots on the fairway about 225 yards. Two shots in the next tee opposite direction 270 yards. All on the fairway. I regularly drive the green or fringe on a 260 hole. Some of the shots are poor and hooked or fade high and wide.

What are you playing off at the moment and how old are you

I don't have a handicap at the moment - still practicing. I normally play my club's 9-hole course (short par 3) and get around +2. Played one golf society competition and got +12 and longest drive (270, downhill). In practice I normally birdie/par/bogey most holes but have occasional nightmare hole. I would guestimate about +12 handicap.

From what I understand only a few of the "bombers" have a swing speed in the 120+ region. Most are 110-120.

As said earlier, if you can hit 80% fairways averaging 250 yrads you can get to scratch if the rest of your game is up to it. No point driving a par 4 green if you 4 putt....... or just missing it, chipping and 3 putting

This piece of kit will bring out the neanderthal in you. Its like those punch bag arcade games you see on holiday where guys are breaking their hands just to be the biggest puncher ... it means hee haw !!!!!!!

REMEMBER

POWER IS NOTHING WITHOUT CONTROL !!!!!!!!

Tim no disrespect but i couldnt be arsed reading the whole post...Im here watching the golf and its too good.....

Anyhoooo....Sorry if this has been used up in someone elses reply but to go back to your original post....

Holy cow. After a few minutes of swingingly wildly it went to 99 - this was using all of my effort (6ft 2in and long arms). Had a rest and a think about it and reckoned that the wrists must be preventing a full release. Back into the garden and got to 109 using a wild uncontrollable swings.

How TF do pros get 120 average? I feel like a right wimp.

I stand corrected here but here's you issue....
In all sports muscles supply the power for the movement....Now i you try and do any movement with tense muscles then it limits your capability to perform the exercise properly....
Try swinging your club again the way you said you did with all your might...See what figures...
Now try swinging the same club again but this time with loose moscles and see what happens....My guess is you'll break 100 and maybe even more...
Its having the ability to be able to control the clubhead at that speed..Thats the problem for most......

Think of swinging into the ball like cracking a whip....
Nice and loose...Ill bet you'll be surprised at what happens. :p

Timgolfy,

Of course the proof is in the pudding, but I can't help taking this all with a very large pinch of salt. How old are you? Par 3 courses are way different to full size 18 holers and a society day with mates or colleagues is not the same as the monthly medal. For a lot of us 270 downhill is more than enough. To be brutally honest (I usually am on here) it's all tosh. Forget the ego, find a repeatable technique and concentrate more on the other end of the course. If you can chip and putt well you can score well anywhere and aren't relying on Bubba Watson impersonations. It may impress your mates how far you hit it but I'd be interested to see your fairways in regulation (an honest total). 250 yards with a shapr short game will be enough to get you down towards single figures.

They guys that are there will tell you more about what it take after that but to be honest your not the first to come on here looking to (or boasting they already can) 300 yard drives. If only a handful of the pros do it regularly and not many AVERAGE 300 anyway why is it such a holy grail for you.

I'm sorry mate but this kit is rubbish and will ruin your swing not improve it and better to dump it now and get some lessons and a great short game

Pros are pros because they hit the ball far (fast clubhead speed) and hit the ball accurately. Most amateur golfers constantly practice hitting the ball accurately, but how often do they practice hitting the ball far?

I believe too much emphasis is placed on accuracy too early on. What's the point in being accurate if your 5 iron is going 150 yards?

Totally agree, you're 100% right. To be at the upper end of this game you need clubhead speed first, then learn to control it. You don't have to be the fastest on the planet but being able to put it out there at 300+yds certainly makes the game easier... if it's not 300yds into the trees!

If you think that is true, look at this list:

PGA Tour Stats

There are big names at both ends of the list, showing that there is more than 1 way to skin a cat!

What am I supposed to be looking at there? They pretty much all seem to be able to crank it up to the 116mph mark when they want to which will put it out to the 300yrd line (or beyond) in the right conditions. Even Luke Donald averages something like 278yds which is MASSIVE compared to most club golfers averages (and with 112mph swing he's considered a 'shorty').
