Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

Pros are born not made.

Sorry - but I don't believe that. Just look at the various shapes and sizes of most pro golfers and you'll see that they have zero in common with each other. Take the two longest hitters - Bubba Watson and J.B. Holmes. One is 6ft 3 weighing 13stone, the other 5ft 11 and 14 st.

This isn't religion -belief has nothing to do with it, and its not what the golfer looks like its how fast their muscles can move. It can be improved with training like tuning a car but if you were born a prius you cannot turn it into a Vayron. All men are NOT born equal. ;)

Actually it is! :D

I'm familiar with the fast twitch fibre thing, and having a high number of fast twitch fibres will help you to become a big hitter, but PGA tour players aren't really big hitters in the big scheme of things. They are bigger than the average handicapper, but nowhere near long drive guys.

So moving on to the born not made thing, the nature v nurture debate hasn't been completely scientifically proven either way. There are plenty of studies supporting both sides, so until science finds the answer to this, stating either case as fact is just what you believe, or 'religion' as you say! ;)

I think the range of bodies on the pro tour proves that "natural" ability (physical attributes) have zero to do with good golf.

if you really believed that you would not have told us in your 1st post that you were 6.2" with long arms :D

Don't agree

Have you ever heard of "hand eye co-ordination"?

co-ordination can be practised and improved, so isn't necessarily a "physical attribute".

Where as height for example, cannot be practised or improved, so is a "physical attribute".

If I take an extra shot than you to get to the green but my last shot is not far and easyer to get to the pin, I may well then 1 put it. You are not wrong it what you say, its just not how I would go about it. I want to know I can hit the ball straight and I will pick up my pace as I go. I have infact had to take pace off my shots to make sure they go where I want.

You must be "naturally gifted" to be long.
You must be long to be good.
Therefore you must be naturally gifted to be good.

Except you can be good without being long, step forward Corey Pavin.

I believe you can also be good without being what people call being "naturally gifted", but the less gifted you are the more you have to have the "gift" of ability to work hard and in a smart way, which is probably even rarer than fast twitch muscle fibres, and perhaps a "natural gift" of mental strength rather than physical strength.

So what car is J.B. Holmes?
:D

Imprezza - Fast, ugly and the starter-motor need attention :D

I don't doubt at all that accuracy is more important than distance (within reason).

Pros are pros because they hit the ball far (fast clubhead speed) and hit the ball accurately. Most amateur golfers constantly practice hitting the ball accurately, but how often do they practice hitting the ball far?

I believe too much emphasis is placed on accuracy too early on. What's the point in being accurate if your 5 iron is going 150 yards?

But it is a natural ability

Hard to say.
If something can be trained, where do you draw the line at it being natural?

Is playing the piano a natural ability?

Playing the piano is pretty difficult if you are naturally tone deaf or dont have a good ear for music.

Disagree again, deaf people can be musicians.

I didn't say deaf people I said tone deaf...a huge difference.
But we have digressed........

Knowing that you are going to hit it that 150 yds and having a good idea where it is going to go - managing the course.

This whole debate about power over distance is irrelevant. There are power hitters and there are more accurate golfers at the end of the day you need it all to come together to get the desired result.

JB Holmes, fast? :o Don't think so!!! JB Holmes would be a Lada diesel. It'll go a long way but, God, it takes ages to get there. :D
