Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

Of course, there is no point having distance with no control. But there's also no point in having control with no distance.

I suppose it comes down to opinions. Is it easier to ramp up a grooved swing for more distance, or to tone down a fast swing for more accuracy?

If you have good control, you are very highly likely to have enough distance because of the quality of your ball striking.

How much is "enough"?

Well, if you're hitting it 250 yards down the middle, then you probably already have "enough". More will come as you improve your swing not from focussing on your swing speed.

I know getting one of these would be bad for me. I'd be doing the same trying to swing faster, but at the loss of control.

I get this every time I get on a launch monitor, my first 5-10 swings are just insanely fast like I'm trying to beat the machine. Once I slow myself down to my normal tempo things are ok again. Well as ok as they can be :D

I'm all for extra distance, but it has to be with control.

I don't think that's true. I believe that swinging fast requires a different "muscle mind-set" - a different technique.

Obviously I'm still a novice so all what I say could be bull! But I'll let you know how I get on. I'm starting my swing speed improvement programme now with an aim of 125mph!

It doesn’t matter how much energy (speed) you have in your swing it’s how much of it that is transferred to the ball that matters (strike quality).

What on earth possessed you to buy something like that?
:D

I can't see that it tells you anything particularly useful in trying to improve your golf.

Why not buy it? Let's face facts - if you want to be a scratch/sub scratch player you need to hit the ball far. To hit the ball far you need a fast swing speed. This tells me how fast I'm swinging, without the need to be on the range.

My philosophy to golf is: learn how to hit it long, then reign it back to hit it accurately.

WRONG! I have played with low guys and hit the ball just as far as them however with the second shot into the green they might hit it to 10' where I will hit it to 15 - 20'.

Pros are born not made.

Sorry - but I don't believe that. Just look at the various shapes and sizes of most pro golfers and you'll see that they have zero in common with each other. Take the two longest hitters - Bubba Watson and J.B. Holmes. One is 6ft 3 weighing 13stone, the other 5ft 11 and 14 st.

This isn't religion -belief has nothing to do with it, and its not what the golfer looks like its how fast their muscles can move. It can be improved with training like tuning a car but if you were born a prius you cannot turn it into a Vayron. All men are NOT born equal. ;)

Good point

Sure you need the speed.
But you also need a good swing path AND a good angle of attack AND a square clubface AND you need to find the club's sweetspot.
If you can do that consistantly at 120mph +, then go for it.

My advice would be to hit as many fairways as you can

So what car is J.B. Holmes?
:D

I would say that most of thye scratch players at my club i could out drive and i am not one of 330 yard monster boys on here.
They are scratch because they find fairways and they find greens - if you want to go low get a red hot short game.

See previous posts on here and the arctile in this months GM mag about how its much more important to be accurate than long.

LD is number 3 in the world and by pro standards he is not a big hitter of the ball.

Would you rather be
1. an accurate player, with a 290 yard drive
2. an accurate player, with a 220 yard drive?

I suppose it depends on what the ultimate aims are. I see old folk on my course tapping the ball 150 yards up the fairway. Two more shots and onto the green. A put or two = 9 handicap. Will they ever be scratch? No.
