I had a small cut at the beginning of the year but since then have steadily had a run of 0.1 increases. I play a small 9 hole course that comprises of only 3 par 4s and they are short. The rest are par 3s ranging from 110yds to 210 yds. My handicap doesnt usually travel well and quite often i play Clevedon golf club where i would normally hit 85 to 90. That would make me a 13 handicapper on a good day. I noticed my ball striking was getting worse with lots of heavy shots so made an appointment with our pro to see what was going on. He pointed out that i had a lot of knee bend and was bent over the ball too much (im 6 2") and a quick check of my grip showed i had let my grip get too strong. Im a lefty playing right handed so evidently that tends to happen. So after a few points about less knee bend and standing taller ive kept at it for a couple of months. My first few range sessions my back got really sore due to using muscles i didnt know i had :D but stuck at it. Gradually it became easier and in my last 2 rounds at clevedon ive hit a 83 and an 84. Also played Weston Super Mare Where again i hit my handicap.
I know a bad score is probably around the corner but my ball striking has got so much better. I now concentrate on what i need to do rather than just hitting a shot and hoping as such.
Sorry for the long post but for those of you making swing changes keep at it as it may feel odd and even give you discomfort but it does pay off

I'm guessing you're a member at tickenham?
I am. With the amount of golf i get to play it doesnt make financial sense to be a full member around here. Im a standard member so i have to pay for each round but gives me a congu handicap and a county card so is worth doing. Where do you play?

I didn't go the membership route this year with the deals on the tee of times app but I think I will join Tall Pines next year. It's ridiculously cheap there and the course isn't bad. At the price they charge you don't mind paying to play elsewhere too.

Im a big fan on the the kendleshire and knowle though. Have you played either of them?

I was toying with Tall Pines and Thornbury but will see what happens with work. In the summer i work a lot of weekends so dont get my moneys worth. Played the kendleshire but not knowle though its on my to play list.

Knowle have just dropped their prices for the winter. Sunday 4 ball is only £76 so it's a bargain now. i played it on the weekend and it's in surprisingly good condition. Greens were perfect.

the will you get your money's worth was my dilemma this year, I like to play all over the place so always in the back of my head. I'm going to take it a bit more seriously next year and try and play in club comps and try and drop my handicap

The sunday fourball sounds tempting but my littleone plays football sunday mornings so i cant play before 1pm so its hard to get a round in. Will have to sort a game out.

The players is better than the kendleshire and they offer more flexible membership deals

really? That's good to know, may have a round there and see what it's like.

I ws a colt member at the kendleshire 2 years ago now for £440, full membership is treble that so wasn't worth it

I'm obviously going to say it, as i am a member there, but there is 36 holes + a 9 hole water garden pitch and putt course which is exceptional. The condition of the course has been so good this season too.

guessing your only just over 30 then given you were colt?

The membership up there is very modern and friendly (im 29), none of the stuffiness you usually get at older clubs!

Yeah I'm 31 now. I will have a look into it and try and get a round in there. The stuffiness is the thing I noticed at a few other courses I've played
