SW from a set or a proper wedge

As with all wedges it's personal choice, there is not right or wrong way.
I match up my gap wedge the rest of my irons and have sand/lob as specialist wedges.

Depends on how you feel about the sw from the set.
I've used a Specialist SW for the last 15 years as I find, generally, the SW from the set doesn't have a suitable bounce or is simply too big and clunky.
As to which Specialist wedge....well that's a whole thread....!

My SW from the set is often my go-to wedge, especially in the soft winter conditions. But that's probably because I am a beginner and don't really know what I am doing! :)

Morning,

Just food for thought.....If you have a SW in set...do you use this SW or actually use a 55/54 Degree wedge in replace?

Depends on your preference really. I personally play PW then 50, 54 and 58. The PW is part of the iron set, and the other wedges are all 'specialist wedges'. I chose this method as you can guarantee even loft gaps and get the bounces you need, whereas the SW from a set normally has a standard loft and bounce you can't alter.

Proper wedge for me everytime. I'll give my new Nike Covert SW a go, but I'll more than likely stick to my 58* out of bunkers. I like to look down at a lot of loft when I'm in a bunker!

I will always go with the sand wedge that matches up with the rest of the irons.
I very rarely (if ever) use a 4 iron so if I have the choice will go for 5-SW as a set.
I have just ordered a matching "gap" wedge (50) for my RS1's but have bought a 58 degree Vokey with very low bounce for getting out of deeper greenside bunkers or for using when the sand is very wet and compacted as my "normal" SW just bounces off of it.

the set SW has been sitting in the cupboard and it just about new - very soon realised the benefit of a specific wedge set up!

way way to sensible an approach :)

I completely agree with Smiffy on the one hand, but then he's included an even more specialist wedge for sand as well - and I agree with this too!

If the one in the set works for you and your sand (generally they are designed around lighter bottomless bunkers) then it makes huge sense to use it - if you want a different one for good reason then by all means get one.

Note, the SW from your set is as proper a sand wedge as your 7 iron is a 7 iron!
