Where do I stand on wanting to miss the green?

My chipping is hot, my long putting is not. GIR, not for me, unless I can get it close.

Can't remember the last fairway I was on either. Thought you were supposed to avoid them, a bit like bunkers.

Seve knew how to play properly. Make it up as you go along, that's the way to do it.

Just to be completely irrelevant I saw Statto of Fantasy Football League fame in the bookshop section of the massive shop tent thing at St Andrews during the Open in 2005. He looks frighteningly like my older brother! Statto... Statto...

I found the idea that stats for fairways hit, GIR and putts/round fascinating in terms of how they should translate to handicaps. It had not occured to me to think/analyse like that, and award a handicap for each part of one's game.

Golfer 2122 do you have stats round the other way - e.g. what stats in these three categories should/does a scatch golfer achieve? What about an 18 handicapper?

All these stats etc are from Scoresaver 2 (web link) which has built-in tables for each handicap.

For a scratch golfer it says:

FW 71%
GIR 64%
Putts/round 29
Sand Saves 55%
Birdie conversion 25%
Par Scrambles 60%
Driving Distance 275 yds
Penalties/round 0.2

For an 18 handicapper it says

FW 36%
GIR 13%
Putts/round 35
Sand Saves 10%
Birdie conversion 12%
Par Scrambles 17%
Driving Distance 185 yds
Penalties/round 1.8

john_findlay and I both use scoresaver 2. There was a ad in Golf Monthly last month with a code GMON76 offering a fiver off. No need to go that far to get the info you need; download the free 30 day trial and then create a new player. Then, change the player's handicap to anything you want and the program shows you the targets for that handicap for each key stats.

It's pretty cool. You can overwrite the built-in targets with your own too.

Many thanks Golfer 2112.

I was surprised to realise how often a scratch golfer doesn't make green in regulation. A real example of drive for show putt for dough!

Putts per round of 35 for a 18 handicapper sounds a stiff target? Since par allows for 2 putts a hole that means they play the greens one under and the rest of the course 19 over? And only 6 of the 18 shots make more than a scratch golfer are played on the green. Or am I making no sense here - it is late and past my bedtime!

I don't think you should read these figures as gospel because there is no such thing as a standard 12 handicapper. The figures are accurate enough to give you targets to aim for and feedback on how you are scoring.
