Early December I suffered a back injury, I have a history of back problems so it wasn't a massive surprise.

Usually two or three weeks and I am on the mend, and with all the snow and ice I hadn't missed any golf time so in a perverse way the back injury couldn't have happened at a better time!!!

Problem is I am still suffering, back at the docs tomorrow and fearful of what will happend.

God only knows when I will play golf again, at the minute my movement is restricted to a chip and run swing.

Not a happy bunny and now friends are starting to get out again and the bigger tournements are on the box I'm gagging for a round!

Unlucky Spoff. Like you, I am also knackered at the moment (see Bad Luck thread). Hope you get some good news at the docs. Chin up, there's worse things happen at sea.

when you go to the doctors, keep on walking past the front door and go to your nearest sports physio... their the people with the real knowledge/experience of how these types of injury can affect your sport, and how sport can have an effect on your injury. Get excercises, keep doing them, keep doing them, do them a wee bit more... play golf again )

keep doing the excercises once you're better as well or it'll just keep coming back.

ime, going to the doctor is a waste of time, as all they do is refer you to see a physio anyway - around here, that can take weeks!

this is from coming back to sport from a broken neck in a footballing accident and the various back problems i have had and still suffer as a result.

I'm 110% with Slugger on this one!

From the age of 12 i've had back problems, the worst period was aged between 18 - 22 when I was a cable puller and would have a week off work every 2-3 months when my back went and I couldnt move.

Numerous visits to the doctors over the years all culminated in either a visit to a hospital physio which was a complete waste of time or being told that it was a muscle issue.

When I was 23 I went to see a proper osteopath and discovered I have 6 siezed vertebrae in the middle of my back and 5 siezed at the top at the base of my neck. A 6 month spell of regular visits to said osteopath including manipulation on the vertebrae themselves and I havent had anymore bad episodes since.

I still have slight problems with all of the same vertebrae but my osteopath advised me to play golf as the movement of the spine (twisting etc) will help loads.

Do yourself a favour and go and see one!

Cheers guys, going to the doctors is as much for works benefit as mine.

Been down the hospital physio route before and know the exercises (I do usually do them but let it slipped recently)

Done the chiropractor before and they couldn't do too much, will look into sports physio/osteopath when I get home tonight.

I recommend Pilates as a method of retaining core back support and preventing strain in future - touch wood so far!

Do not have a cortisone injection unless its a last resort, they are a short term fix that can become a long term problem. They make the area better for a while but then the pain comes back worse because you have been doing damage whilst you think it is better.Go to a specialist its the best advice.

Hi Guys,

Thought I would butt in as I am about 8 months to the good following a back operation!!!

For about the last 10 years I have suffered with intermittent pain in my lower right back which eventually spread into my leg, then at worst into my foot which went completely numb.

Over the years my doc claimed it was just muscle spasm and referred me to various physios, chiro and osteopath.

My advice is be very careful of all of these, I tried pilates, yoga etc under diagnoses of all these people with no success and in some cases making things worse.

I eventually insisted upon getting an MRI scan, (although via private health care admittedly), at which point I found out I had a prolapsed disc.

I saw a surgeon at Kings College Hospital in London and he was so shocked at how bad my back was, he operated the same day as he was worried there was nerve damage which is non repairable!!!

As I said earlier that was about 8 months ago and following the surgery, exercises and (ahem losing a bit of weight) my back has never been better and I am playing golf again, and doing most of the things I did before.

Sorry this is quite a long post, but please take care and look after yr back!!!!

didsbury_duffer, you mentioned you had a cortisone injection.

Is that something the doc does? what are the side effects?

I would not recommend a cortisone jab for a back problem. My wife has had a back problem for many years and regularly sees a sports physio who is vehemently against cortisone for back problems. Take the other guys advice and get yourself to a sports physio.

Oh, and the side effects of my jab is that it is gives you a sex addiction like Tiger's. ;) ;)

Went to the docs as the appointment was booked and it was pointless. he referred me to physio and told me to get on with it.

(I've had a weekend of being careful and didn't feel too bad last night, in the office for just over an hour now and struggling big time) 'Just getting on with it' is no good.

I have a friend to has been seeing a sports physio for a while now so I have an appointment with them on Thursday morning.

I'll see how that goes and if limited success I will take BunkerMentality123's route and go private for an MRI.

Thanks everyone.
