St Andrews for high handicappers?

New and Jubilee are really great courses and fine to play for almost every level - generally 'very user-friendly'!. Only possible issue for high-cappers (short/stray hitting?) might be the 9th of the New - a long par 3 beside the river/estuary with (from ancient memory) no bale-out, so wind speed/direction could be an issue. 10th is, again from ancient memory, a blind tee shot. I've only played Jubilee once, but enjoyed it too (though I prefer(ed) the New). It's marginally more difficult than New, but was a bit 'scruffy' when I played it. Like all links courses, difficulty on any day depends on the weather/wind!

I've a mate thinking of trip up there this summer, so thought I'd post up
See if anybody got any recommendations for digs

He ain't looking to pay big bucks
Just nice clean bed at night
Close by to courses

I think St Andrews will be absolutely perfect for your group. The New and Jubilee are very accessible for all abilities. The Eden is a lovely course and is a bit shorter.

The courses are challenging, but actually they are quite wide, you won't lose loads of balls. The challenge comes in other forms, which are fun for any level of golfer, e.g. deep bunkers, winds, subtle borrows on huge greens.

As others have said, St Andrews is an incredible place for any golfer. It's just completely golf centric and has so much history.

The Castle course is, as others have said, more of a challenge. However, even then, I can only think of one long-ish carry (17th). The challenge on the castle is its greens and some blind tee shots.

You'll love it.

Consider the university accommodation if they're doing it at the moment.

There's a Premier Inn in St Andrews, it's a wee bit out of the town centre, but if you don't mind a short walk home from the Pub it is good. They serve a standard 'pub grub' dinner on-site in the PI if you can't face the walk, but it'd be a shame to miss out on a night in St Andrews.

Uni Accommodation is a good call if they are doing it when you are there.

Wherever you stay I'm sure you'll have a great trip - special place.

What was it like playing off mats? I don't think I'd want to make the pilgrimage to St Andrews to play off a mat.

Also, I'm guessing the rough was significantly cut down for winter.

Apologies, was still in 2019 mode. By ‘this year’, I meant recently ? it was in October and so fortunately no mats!

We were out first on the New Course and had nobody behind us at all. It was magnificent!

We sorted our accommodation yesterday. The Premier Inn was pretty expensive, £190 a night for a single or a twin room for June. We found a decent 3 bed semi 15 mins walk from the town centre for £100'a night on Airbnb.

Wow......!!!
Must be the most expensive premier Inn in the UK...

Supply and demand I guess. £190 allows you to cancel the day before. The lowest rate is £160 with no refund if you need to cancel. Their covid policy is a joke, no refund for any covid-related closure, only the option to reschedule.

Playing St Andrews New and Old in April (COVID permitting) never had any issues having a high handicap myself.
We are staying at Scores Best Western Hotel.

The old course is the only place I’ve had my handicap certificate checked.

No issues being a higher handicapper at St. Andrews from a playability perspective though, that’s for sure.
