I took a 9iron on a par 3 last week and to my amazement the ball landed, paused... and spun back 6-8ft.

It was the 8th at Reigate Hill, 130+ yards, the tee is extremely elevated and there was a slight wind (in my face but mainly from the right). Conditions were clear and bright and the greens fairly soft.

How did this happen??

I’m new to golf and currently obtaining my handicap from Reigate Hill. The swing felt pretty normal and I have tried to replicate it at the range without success.

On the day it done me no favors as the pin was on the bottom tier and could have done with a little roll to get me down there, but if anyone could shed any light on how i have done this or replicate it I would be grateful.

Thanks Tom

Its all about hitting down on the ball and getting it first before touching a blade of grass. The quality of the ball, wind direction and also the condition of the green all goes together to give you a better chance of repeating it.

Spin is created from a purely hit shot, unlikely to be repeated very often.
Also the spin made you come up short.
Take a longer club,an 8 iron in this case, and hit it smoother, not harder.
A great tip from another thread last week,it certainly helped me last weekend.
