Spieth's Drive hits spectator on the backside

If you look in the rule book, Section 1 (Etiquette), it says:

If a player plays a ball in a direction where there is a danger of hitting someone, he should immediately shout a warning. The traditional word of warning in such a situation is `fore`.

Should does not mean must, and that is how they get away with it.

I've got a crazy idea....

How about, just for once, we judge the video in the light hearted way it's intended. The guy was ok, everyone laughed it off and the world was a happy place for a moment.

Crazy eh?

This kind of reckless, and quite frankly outré, thinking is just dangerous. We MUST find something wrong in everything. Imagine a world where people were prepared to accept things as purely coincidental and or accidental without serious repercussions. Society would surely implode on itself and the world would come to an end.

I mean...it would...would't it? It would have to.

I watched all the golf this morning I wonder if anyone else was.

Speith and I believe it was the 2nd hole of his round drove the ball right off the tee and I also believe again that it was Rory or Fowler that pointed right.
As Speith walked back towards his caddie the microphone picked up Speith saying
"I hope it doesn't hit him" or something along those lines.
No-one in the group shouted "Fore" and imo and of course its only an opinion its a flaming disgrace.

I remember a couple years back a player getting hit and everyone was downing tools and going to hospital with him.
Only when someone gets seriously hurt maybe it will become a rule.

I was watching live and Jordon was watching his ball go way off target and as he was watching it in flight heading for the path where people were walking, he said, whilst picking up his tee, "oh don't hit him" as it bounded across the path!!

No shout or any indication to anyone in that area that a ball was coming in on the full!

He did the same on a par 3 a few holes later when the ball luckily stopped just 1 yard short of everyone sitting at the back of the green!

He's a worse offender for it 😡

Sadly this is probably the truest post in this thread, nothing will change until a major event causes it to.

We are lucky enough to view so close to the fairways that this will always be an issue at pro meets. IMHO the spectator is an idiot and at fault for two reasons:

1) not paying attention
2) wearing a bum bag/fanny pack- although in this situation it really did save his arse!

I found it funny as fook watching his mate in the green shirt

I've watched it 4 times now and there's definitely a shout of "fore left" .

The fella must've heard a shout because he had his back turned and arm over his head

Spieth's a lucky boy.

It's not Spieth shouting, all he does is stick his club in the air to indicate, thinking everyone is watching!

At least there was a shout. I agree he should've shouted, I've shouted for a pp before today.

I read this thread before watching the video. Fatal mistake

I just watched it and there was definitely a shout of fore. It was an American voice but the camera had moved off so may have been Jordan or Rickie. There was an earlier wayward hit from Rory, who signalled, but Jordan was the one shouting fore.

Speith is literally the luckiest golfer ever he gets so many bounces that seem to go for him, hitting this guy stopped his ball getting wet.

As for not shouting fore, it will feed down to club level the pros like it or not are role models and should set the standards.

That was funny but also scary , if the ball had hit him on the head it could have done some serious damage, the pros don't shout enough of the tee

I also saw that & thought to myself, what an ignorant twunt. He obviously knew he was endangering a spectator but didn't give a toss.

It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed at a pro event. It is going to happen.
It should be a rule that the player or his nominated shouter (caddie) shout an audible warning when a loose shot happens.

No shout = 1 shot penalty
They will soon get the message

Many years ago I played in a "pro-am" at Lamberhurst GC. The pro in our group was from Cottesmore GC in Sussex.
He was a bad tempered so and so, kept moaning about the greens all the way round, but after the game he invited myself and my friend to his club for a game.
On the day, we got to a fairly short par 4 with a lake to carry. Two choices, either knock an iron off the tee and play over for your second, or the big hitters could unleash one at the green.
My friend and I knocked irons off the tee down to the water, but the pro decided to have a crack at the green, despite there being two players putting out on it.
We couldn't believe that anyone, let alone a "professional" was going to do this, but do it he did.
The ball thudded into the green and shot out the back. If it had hit either of the two players in front, it could have killed them.

I have been hit by golf balls several times, but near the end of their travel they have usually slowed down enough that they don't hurt that much. My father once shanked an iron tee shot at a par 3 hole (must be hereditary) that hit my mother waiting by the side of the Ladies tee squarely in the middle of her back. That did hurt, and left her with a huge bruise and an egg sized lump. Nearest I ever saw my parents come to a divorcé! She was not happy! :(
