Snobbery

I was amazed the other day when a work colleague said to me, “I like golf but I don’t play because it is such an elitist snobbish sport. How do you answer such a blinkered comment?

If my memory is correct, this is from someone who wrote something like.... "the state of my PRIVATE course is no better than the COUNCIL courses nearby"

Snobby?? Of course not!!

That's not snobby, it's common sense. A private course will genrally have less traffic, more experienced golfers and a higher budget so should be in better condition.

Well Colin, I do possibly have this problem as no doubt you are an authority on common sense but I have had little to complain about when playing Carnoustie, St Andrews and my other favourite Nairn Dunbar - all council run with no more evidence of tight budget control or hackers than when I play private courses like Lethan Grange, Crail or Nairn GC.

Looking to the future, many private clubs however are suffering from budget problems at the moment and I hope we don't find this reflected in playing conditions before this year is over.

Clearly they are exceptions 19th as well you know, try talking to any greenkeeper on an inner city muni and you'll get a different picture. You could of course ask him why his course isn't as good as Carnoustie etc, but I'd stand a safe distance away when you do.

I am afraid your memory is not correct. But for the record. Not only is my PRIVATE course much better than the council courses nearby, they make a wonderful Gin and Tonic, Bottoms up dearboy. ;)

Hi Pro_V, sorry wrong guy, he had the same accent in his postings!

Jealous of the G & T but not so sure of this 'Bottoms Up' bit! It is 'Chin Chin' in my club with the little finger pointing south.
