Smoking

I'm a reformed smoker (the worst kind perhaps) but while being fully in favour of the current laws I wouldn't like to see a ban in these circumstances. Fact, some people smoke. Kids and parents will always have to deal with that and I don't think the odd shot of an aging golf pro is going to do any harm to the sport or send our youth running to the newsagents for 10 B&H. It will be seen for what it is, something done by mostly the over 40's (whenever was that cool for kids?) and increasingly a minority passtime.

Golfers, like it or not are role models and athletes, and therefore should not publically promote smoking. If a pro athlete does it the perception is its ok, it is not smoking is one of the worst things you can do for your health.

Ban it! Ban it in it's entirety. Anyone caught doing it ANYWHERE must be sentenced to life imprisonment! As has been said, it's a pointless and deadly pastime.....as is drinking alcohol so let's ban that as well. Once again, anyone caught drinking booze receives a public flogging and life imprisonment. I read somewhere this week that the Scots drink the most so lets ban them from TV as well.

It's probably worth banning music as well. I find Led Zepplin's Stairway to heaven particularly worrying. My 21 month old son isn't too good on stairs and I worry that he might listen to the song, think that there is a stairway to heaven, try and climb it and fall down. Mind you, I could sue Page and Plant then.....

Lastly, probably best to ban women as well. I worry that seeing them on TV might mean that my son wants to live with one when he's older and we all know where that leads - a life time of pain and suffering!

Having written all that I realise that perhaps the Taliban have it right..... :(

Smoking, unlike drinking, damages health no matter how small the dose. It also has the potential to damage the health of someone who just happens to be standing near by through second hand smoke etc. Comparing it to drinking is a red herring. If I have a few beers standing next to you, it won't damage your health or make you smell like an ashtray. Any medical professional will tell you it's the worst thing you can do to damage your health, personally I'd bad it completely, it's pointless.

Alcohol is the second most common cause of cancer. And having a 'few beers' is over the stated dose that people should be drinking. Also it changes you behaviour and reaction time (even after one or two) along with lots of other things. It's not as bad for you as somking agreed but it is by no means a red herring.
Unless its alcohol free beer but then I'm not sure what you would be trying to say about yourself then.

Live and let live.

I'm pro smoking so I say it's OK to smoke on the course. It's an open space so I can't see why anyone would object.

The only issue would be where the finished cigarettes are put. As long as they are disposed of correctly then no problem.

Totally agree well put

I dont smoke!

But

Also totally agree with these comments!

I quite like seeing Jimenez with a cigar on the course, it doesn’t make me want to try one on the course.

It has made me want to strive to become a Pingwhore though.

Great picture of a total legend :D ;)

If smoking is made illegal, then you're right.

But until that time, all the while it is legal to have a puff, it would be wrong to ban it from the course.

As has already been mentioned only the old, nervous, or stupid pros actually do it, so there's no way it could be seen to be glamourous to a young kid, so any adult who can't positively influence his son/daughter to not smoke is on a loser anyhow.

As long as the fag ends go in the bin I'm fine with it. Gives me an advantage if the person i'm playing with is out of puff :D

Just received a good letter about professionals smoking on the course. What are your thoughts? Should it be allowed?

Is it really an issue. How many smoke, and more to the point, how many actually smoke on the course in front of the TV cameras?

Reminds me of the PGAs 'Pros must shave' debate from last year.

As for our own courses. That's a different arguement.

Though I will add that I've never thrown anyone out of the nightclub for smoking too much. Or seen anyone lying in the middle of the road in town throwing up, because they've had one fag too many................

It's not an excuse for smoking. But smoking and drinking are two very different problems.

Definately different problems. You can still swing with a fag in your mouth, but if you try it holding a can of beer, you will get wet, and god knows where the ball will end up.

I can't believe the question has actually been asked...what next? Ban us drinking anything other than mineral water as coke is full of sugar and bad for you?? :D

If you want to have a few draws get on with it.

Does seeing Nick Dougherty,Darren Clarke and John Daly to name a few make you think twice about playing this great game? Answer for me is does it bolloxs.

It happened in the snooker and darts Dodger... just putting it out there. Personally, I don't see the harm unless people start leaving butts all over the course. Poor old Alan McManus must have to have a quick puff between frames now, how long before pro golfers are told to wait five hours until they finish their round? Surely it's possible...

Never touched one in my life but it is outside and smokers have had it rough over the ban, so for me it's outside so let em have a puff if they need one.

like flydewhite, I'm one of the purified - really can't stand smoking anymore, but a golf course is one place where I can tolerate it. there's enough free space for it not to be around me (stay downwind), though too many think the world is their ashtray (ought to be a penalty for creating obstructions!)

(but I'll still give hapless a hardtime whenever he lights up)
