Smart meters, can I insist on having a 'non smart' one?

I have been told I need a smart meter, as my meter is outdated and needs replacing.
I just advise them my digital meter either works or it doesn’t, and as the thing still reads it must therefore be working. I also have a 2 rate meter, which they don’t really like.
I won’t be having a smart meter until it becomes a compulsory thing, and is totally compatible with every supplier.

Compatibility ain't going to happen!!

I don't get the insistence on having one if they then become useless when you change supplier. Does this mean there will be a constant need for meters to be fitted after each change of supplier or will there eventually be a universal meter, as there should have been from day 1?

My post was in reply to jim8flog and his point about not having an objection to having one. It wasn’t trying to argue the toss for the sake of it.
I’m an Electrician with 35 years experience, I’ve worked with a lot of EDF guys and not one of them would have a smart meter.
Why not? Educate me as to the concerns.

Some firms are still fitting the first generation because there aren't enough second generation yet - despite the government edict.
