Small portable harddrive?

agree with Paddy (amazeballz :) might be best to keep it simple
will you be using a program to backup or drag n drop? if a program, I can recommend Synctoy http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155

PM me if you need more details.

word of warning about NAS drives, had a guy once who used one as a document/picture & music server for the whole household so music etc could be streamed wherever. BUT that was his only copy of the data and when the hard drive died, he realised he didnt have a backup.

So dont copy stuff to your backup drive, then delete it from the PC,

My NAS is backed up to Le'Cloud... good point though PTF, Most NAS systems still use manual drives, this CAN and most likely WILL fail at some point. Back up your backup is my advise! Thats coming from the man that lost all of the newborn pictures of child #3. Mrs R was not happy...

Is that why you had number 4?.....................................................Just askin :)

had one bloke pay £400 to a data recovery lab to recover the baby pics, without telling the wife as she would have ripped them off with a blunt spoon

My pics are all backed up online aswell. And my NAS has 4 disks in a RAID 5 config, so i can suffer the loss of a single disk and my data will be intact.

For offsite instant backup I use Carbonite, unlimited space for $59 dollars a year

other cloud services are available, but the free ones tend to have a small data allowance, i've got about 120 Gb of music, pics and imurgs secret porn stash (shhhhh)

hmmm I've now gone from a portable plug n play thingy to back up family pics/vids to a network you could run a small business on:eek:
appreciate the help fellas:thup:

Now you have opened the cookie jar though I want to see more so will pursue a NAS and not delete from the PC when I do (good advice thanks).

p.s is there a programme that can search all duplicate files/pics/videos on my pc as I got so paranoid I might have backed up more than once then in a different folder so it wouldnt alert me it already existed. I've only 60GB left on a 500GB hard drive so I could delete once on the NAS if they are duplicates.

thanks for the patience fellas.

thats a drag, ive just downloaded it onto my spare system, run it, then run a malwarebytes scan, all clear, so you will be fine as long as you dont install the add ons. try internet explorer or firefox instead

there are apps that can detect duplicates, I havnt been that bothered about it though as my NAS has 6TB of space so its not really an issue.
Storage is cheep these days.

Thanks PTF, I'll do that via a different browser.

I'm jumping between a portable storage and a single unit NAS. The NAS is favourite for what it can do but a google search brings up all these issues of people creating IP addresses or having to configure the NAS and do port forwarding to work on their network etc and thats the bit that worries me.

what about this one?

You would need to still buy 2 x Hard drives!! thats just the base unit with no drives!

I would look at something more "consumer" that will be more suitable, easier to set up. OK will have less features than that, but 100% will do what you want.

Do you have a smart TV? What brand is it? Some drives have compatible apps..

Something like this if you have a Samsung post 2012 would be awesome: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-STC...3?ie=UTF8&qid=1421848075&sr=8-13&keywords=NAS

Dont worry about port forwarding.. you only need to start thinking aobut it you plan to access your NAS from outside of your home network from over the internet. Even then a lot of NAS's come with an app these days to streamline the process.

A nas will get an IP address from your Router, same as other devices do and will be easy to find on your network.
