small cash prizes

Assume you mean without losing amateur status. See amateur rule 3-2. http://www.randa.org/Amateur-Status/MainRules/3-Prizes/SubRules/2-Prize-Limits

An amateur golfer
must not accept a prize ...in excess of £500...in any one competition or series of competitions.

The reference you provided, Rule 3-2, talks about a the value of a prize being limited to 500 pounds, not cash/money up to that limit. Rule 3-1 is applicable - "An amateur golfer must not play golf for prize money or its equivalent in a match, competition or exhibition." This says that cash prizes are forbidden for amateurs, regardless of the amount.

The answer for the original poster is no, cash prizes are not permitted. However, gift certificates are ok.

Does every medal in the land not pay cash prizes?

At my club you pay an entry fee and an optional sweep. Each of these elements pay an amount of cash to the top placed players in different categories.

You shouldn't pay cash prizes I believe - we pay out in vouchers

No, our weekly comps and two's pot all become monetary credits in my Pro shop account to spend, they have never been cash at any club I've been a member at, however, I've played in quite a few winter series and travelling competitions like Tee Tours, Finch etc and they all pay out in a mixture of Pro vouchers and cash!?

Just to clarify as I don't know about others but TeeTours prizes are not in cash form.

Sweepstakes are OK if they meet certain criteria. They are not considered prizes but gambling.

As I clearly stated, I've played in a lot of these and have been paid out in a mixture of vouchers & cash, the cash is the optional sweep and as has now been quantified is actually gambling, so not a cash prize per se, but my original statement is factual, I have been paid out in a mixture of vouchers, alcohol and cash.

Last club was all cash for all comps. No big deal. New club is credit on your card

And as I clearly stated my comment referred solely to TeeTours events.

Jeez, talk about being argumentative, do you support Liverpool also?

My only concern was that your remark suggested that TeeTours arranged events that would breach the R&A's Rules on Amateur Status, which would be the case if cash prizes were awarded.

As for supporting Liverpool!!!!!!!!!?????

But it's now been quantified that cash in a sweep is not a prize, it's gambling and separate, hence I have had a mixture of cash & vouchers along with other (bottles) prizes, so no breach, so get back in yer box..:smirk:

At this year's TeeTours events?

I'm confused now. What's the difference between a "sweepstake" and an "entry fee"? Having read the definition of sweepstake in RoAS decision 7-2/2, it sounds a lot like an entry fee to me?

But as matter of interest, at ours, winning in Pro-shop comps gets a credit on your account, but club organised comps get you a few pound notes in an envelope? Does this mean I'm no longer an amateur? (Or wouldn't be, had I actually won anything)

An entry fee is compulsory and is retained by the club. A sweepstake is optional and all the proceeds are paid out.
There could be a third optional element; a 2s club, another sweepstake.

Many clubs just wrap them all up in one price and assume entrants will simply unknowingly accept their entry into the optional sweeps without objection.

I would say so but I won't tell anyone.
