small cash prizes

An entry fee is compulsory and is retained by the club. A sweepstake is optional and all the proceeds are paid out.
There could be a third optional element; a 2s club, another sweepstake.

Many clubs just wrap them all up in one price and assume entrants will simply unknowingly accept their entry into the optional sweeps without objection.

I would say so but I won't tell anyone.

I'm very surprised that a group who are so punctilious about handicapping rules would be so loose about amateur status rules? Can non-amateurs have valid handicaps? Confusing - maybe someone can explain it?

I think he's saying that people who accept cash prizes would become non amateurs

It was this comment that puzzled me. Who has made a comment about handicapping to be accused of being punctilious?

Come on it's not hard to see what correlation he is trying to make. If you accept cash prizes then your not playing by the rules, and if your not playing by the rules then maybe other areas of the game would be questionable too.

Yes we know that the rules of golf and Congu are two different things but it's not hard to see what he was trying to get to.

Seems petty when it's only £10 or £20 etc but that's the rule. The club cannot offer cash prizes for the competition - end of. Bets, sweeps etc run between players are not prizes so don't count. Our club, and most others I guess get around this by awarding vouchers (which are allowed subject to the maximum limit) for the pro shop or club bar/food etc.

I understand the significance of the RoG and CONGU being adhered to but the post implied that 'a group' were suggesting in this thread that there is was a difference. It is that which puzzled me.

Most clubs should know that it's against R&A rules to give out cash prizes to any Amatuer golfer. Hence why most give out pro shop vouchers

In the grand scheme of things someone winning £20 in a medal isn't suddenly a pro or a comp giving more than the stipulated £500 equivalent prize does make the players Pro's and I doubt anyone including the R&A would make a fuss about it

Doesn't apply to society/social meets where prize funds are classed sweeps etc

But comps organised by official gold organisations - golf clubs - trilby tours etc must follow the rules

Does it depend on the type of comp or the nature of the prize? The rule says an amateur cannot play for prize money. It does not specify any type of comp.

My point was that players and clubs that appear to be very concerned about CONGU handicapping "rules" appear to be much less concerned about the rules of amateur status, and wondering why the difference in concerns?

Because it's a very convenient rule to brush off and ignore.
The power of cash and corruption.
