Friday it was when I received the e-mail from them there people at Direct Golf. They were alerting me to a Smiffy-like deal - a Sunderland waterproof top - retails at £100 up Town - £38 to me!! I bit their hand off!! I must have placed my order within two minutes of getting the e-mail.

I added a little something for my Dad as he's 73 in a couple of weeks and all was well.

I received an e-mail from Direct Golf telling me that the Sunderland jacket is now out of stock!! Given my excellent reaction time to their e-mail I'm wondering how many of the aforementioned jackets they actually had to sell!!

At first I just shrugged my shoulders and carried on, now I'm a bit annoyed....

Got the exact same e mail myself mate.

The so called sales DG have are just an excuse to offload a load of surplus gear they have lying around.

Had a browse round one of their branches a few months ago. Perusing the fairway woods with a view to adding a 5 wood to my existing 3 wood. Spotted a few, noticed a ridiculously low price stuck on the heads. Now perspiring as I was convinced I was getting a bargain I inspected the clubs........ladies flex shaft, seniors and chuffing left handed. "Sorry, we don't have any 5's in your spec left, have you seen these John Letters fairway woods?" Could have punched him!!!

It seems a common problem. I've had a number of mails through with what look like fantastic offers including FJ Icons for £80. Great if you have size 7 narrow feet. I tend not to take to much interest in them now and usually delete them unless there is something I fancy (like the Icons).

It's called marketing - and every sales organisation do it in some form or another. Some sail very close to the wind with their tactics and are just about legal.

The wife dragged me round the January sales this year. Emblazoned across the window of M&S - 60% off sale, but in small letters under the 60 it had 'up to' - that's the legal bit. And the sale, just one small section with all the end of season rubbish. After a very short while, I said to the wife, "I'm going for a coffee". To contemplate my next round of golf. :D

Golfmmad.

This whole 'up to' and 'from' malarky really gets on my wick. It's a cop out. But I guess that it works on the majority. I could say that I have training aids for sale from £2.95. But I would like to think that us golfers would realise that your not going to get a £100 item for £2.95. Which is why I don't like the tactic personally.

Car ads hack me from that point of view. 'From' £10,995. Except the sexy little car you see in the ad with the leather, bigger wheels, special alloys, Bose stereo, and the 1.8 litre engine is actually £24,995. Why show me one price and show footage of something different?

It's like arranging a date with Kylie, or (insert personnal preference here), and Susan Boyle turns up.

Marketing. Bah! Surely people don't fall for this rubbish!

If they do, I might just have to change my own morals.
