Sky coverage

I dont believe BBC has been out priced considering they just spent £200m on football highlights for 3 years but cant match skys bid of £10m for the Open....which was only £3m that it paid last year.

Thats why they probably cant match the Sky bid, they probably havent got any money left! 200 million just for highlights, the world really has gone crackers.

Those highlights give the BBC 4-5 million viewers every single week it is on. That's why they spend the money on it.

The Open attracts around 4 mil once a year

As golfers we would have no issues with BBC spending £3mil more to have the Open but the other 10's of millions of BBC viewers would have an issue

Oh i know why they spend the money on it. Its the fact that they spend 200 million on it that's amazing!

The price of football now - BT Sports spent £1 Billion to pay for rights to show some games

That money doesn't help the fans - it goes to the clubs

The BBC would never pay for Euro or PGA tour highlights. It's seen as a niche to show regularly for such a huge outlay and to be honest the viewing figures for it wouldn't be great tucked away late in the schedules. Contrary to popular belief I can't see too many people interested in 2nd round highlights from the St Omer Open or John Deere Classic

The US coverage is all sown up and to be honest only Sky are interested in showing it. They have the financial clout and airtime to fill so it seems a perfect fit. In my own opinion all this talk about the Open, US or Euro tour coverage going to satellite TV and being bad for the game is a bit of an excuse. In the modern world, there are a host of packages and options available should someone want to watch a specific event. I'm frankly not fussed if it the BBC lose it or not. They've hardly worked hard to improve the quality of their coverage in the last decade. At the end of the day if you don't have Sky, and want to see the golf I'm sure the local pub or golf club will have it on ;);)

Im appreciative that golf is actually shown on TV, whether its Sky, BBC. The fact that Woods or McIlroy dominates the coverage is a minor inconvenience compared to years ago when there was sweet FA to watch.
