sir nick my ar$e

I'm glad she's acknowledged the importance of winning a major but it still pains me that he's got a knighthood. Great player but an ar$e of a person. picking his lovechold still for the ryder cup still gets me!

Nick Faldo is the most important, and the best english golfer ever, no question (IMO the best British golfer also), anyone who disagrees needs to take that fat chip off there shoulder and wake up. Arise Sir Nick about time to.

As for the Poulter comment he was our leading points scorer and the only one of the European team who looked like he cared - so sit down you dumb ****

Seconded - A well-deserved award for both on and off-course work over the years IMO.

If it hadn't been for Nick Faldo there would be thousands upon thousands of people not enjoying this wonderful game now. He brought fresh excitment to the game (along with Seve) and at last we had somebody to cheer for! It wasn't pure coincidence that new golf clubs started springing up all over the places as the popularity of the game increased, due in no uncertain way to Nick Faldo's achievements.

OI! Stop knocking him! The man is a LEGEND of Golf (a word I do not use lightly) and deserves this honour. Yes he does not have a great personality, neither has Tiger. Tiger woods is a as bland as mayonaise but try to slag him off on here and you will be shot down in flames. He has done so much for the development of UK Golf and been so successful I can't see what people have against him apart from being a bit boring? However, this so called boring Golf of 18 pars won him the open, what's boring about that? Can you do it? ......

Nick has more majors than all except Vardon and he played when golf was a gentlemans hobby rather than a sport - You are just trying to be obnoxious, you know (because every one knows) that Nick deserves this, put down your big scottish chip for a second, an celebrate the BEST BRITISH GOLFER EVER. I can see that and I was never a Faldo fan I was always a Seve fan.

I just don't understand why we have to put brilliant people down in this country its pathetic jealousy.

I am NOT trying to be obnoxious nor is it pathetic jealousy. I didn't claim that Faldo was the No.1 British golfer ever although I do agree that he has done a lot for the youth programme, (as has Paul Laurie). I simply think there are other British golfers who have done more for the sport over the years than Nick Faldo. I agree that he has probably won more than most but it doesn't make him the best ever. We now have better travel conditions than there were in the days of Henry Cotton and Harry Varden and we have more tournaments than nowadays so it is probable that todays golfers will win more. (Tiger Woods v Jack Niclaus is a prime example)
Personally I don't think any sportsman deserves a Knighthood or OBE/MBE for simply being good at their job. Kelly Homes and Chris Hoy are examples of the current culture of honours. To me honours should be bestowed on those who deserve them. People who work tirelessly for charity, to help others and serve their country. Not Civil Sevants who get them for long service, pop/movie stars, footballers and managers who see it as part of their "Celebrity" Status.

I told you it was opening a can of worms!

Well said CW, Varden was a phenomenon, though no gongs for working class lads in his day. L S Lowry had the right attitude to so called honours, just wish he could paint better! :D

He's the No 1 British Golfer - ever.

Now that is a matter of opinion. I think you might be opening a can of worms with that statement!

So who is if Sir Nick isn't? Not being stroppy but lets have some candidates...

Me not saying yet whether or not I think Sir Nick is the greatest ever - but if you want a few candidates chucked into the pot, how's about JH Taylor? Or, Harry Vardon or Ted Ray? to name but three. Harry in particular wiped the floor with pretty much everyone he played against.

picking his lovechold still for the ryder cup still gets me!

Now call me a bit slow. But I'm not one for 'gossip' type news. But what the 'eck is this about? From later posts I'm guessing that it's Poulter. But this ain't for real! Someones gotta be yanking me........ Surely!!

Back to the OP. Oh yeah. Well done!

Okay so this is a slightly apathetic view to the 'honours' list. But so often I've seen it as a 'political' thing, even when it's not supposed to be. In my mind, the only people that should be knighted are those that give something worthwhile back to society. Regardless if they're rich and famous or haven't got a brass farthing to rub together.

For the 'junior' programme, Nick deserves this. But let us remember that he doesn't do this single-handed. A general never won a battle on his own!

As for the rest of us. I would probably be so bold to say that he is probably responsible (through his professional success) for the popularity of the game in the UK today, after his successes in the 80's.

I am all for the award. I know little about his former career but can't help but respect the work he does now, the Faldo series is a tremendous organisation that not only gives talented youngsters in this country a gateway to success but take golf around the world to kids who otherwise may never have sampled this great game. I do know enough to deem Faldo to have been a truly great golfer and for that reason he is more than worthy of such a status, especially in comparison to some others to have been knighted in recent years.

I too congratulate Sir Nick, and well deserved too.
To win 6 majors a single minded determination is required, not a personality. It's really annoying to hear people knocking him after all he's achieved for British golf.

As for the Ryder Cup, it wouldn't of mattered what order our team went out in, the way America played was just too good for us, and the better team won. Just as Barcelona triumphed over Man United, just too good on the day.

I'd like to hear more of his golf commentry - uncompromising.
Maybe he could take over from Gary Lineker!

OK I'll start:-

Old Tom Morris.
Young Tom Morris.
Sir Henry Cotton.
Harry Varden.
James Braid.

But they had a handful of opponents in their time. Not decrying their achievements at all but to win from a small field or a small number of potential winners doesn't stand up to the more modern game where you have 30-40 potential winners of the Majors. The 1862 Open at Prestwick was won by Tom Snr from a field of.......8. At Muirfield in 48 Cotton only had to beat 31 others in the last 2 rounds. If you're a half decent player you're going to win more from a small field. Muirfield in '92 (when Faldo won) 75 players made the cut from a field of 156.

Its typical British behaviour I'm afraid. Knock him because you don't like him.
He is the best these islands have produced and will be for a very long time - End of!

I am sorry but I have never "Knocked" Faldo. As for accusing me of not liking him it is presumtious to say the least. All I said was it is a matter of opinion if you think Faldo is the No 1 British golfer ever.

hahahahahahahaha yeah thats right thankfully for sir prick the country once again found the game it invented. Thank god for that, otherwise all that practise i put in those years ago would have been wasted!

the usa whipped us and we did nothing about it! oh thats right it was the players fault! silly little boys...........why do we have a captain then?

Oh dear. Someone's missed my point. That being that the rise in popularity of the game around that time was due in part, to Nicks success on the golf course. Same as the rise in popularity of the game around the time of Tigers first major success's.

Not that Nick was some kind of prodical son!!

you know i used to wear pringle jumpers to school and i looked cool! they were plain in colour with a nice dragon crest!.......and then some prick come along and changed the logo to a triangular twisted clown splattered all over front trying to knock-in a one inch putt surrounded by a multi-coloured junkyard! not so cool anymore mister!!!!!

my le-sharks went down hill after that as well!!

and thats why he picked the lovechild!!! same sense in fashion
