Sir Ian Poulter

Good fun discussion but just to put it into perspective I can think of only 4 golfers who have been knighted

Sir Henry Cotton
Sir Michael Bonallack
Sir Nick Faldo and
Sir Bob Charles

Did some research on golfers with honours

Tony Jacklin, Laura Davies and Dai Rees were awarded the CBE.

Monty, Bernard Gallacher, John Jacobs, Woosie, Sam Torrance, Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, Max Faulkner, Mickey Walker, Dale Reid and I'm sure a few other stalwarts have been awarded OBE's.

I think they will award the MBE for winning a Major e.g. Paul Lawrie, Sandy Lyle, GMac and Rory, or some other significant achievement or sustained contribution (e.g. Neil Coles, Brian Huggett, Luke Donald, Tommy Horton, Alison Nicholas)

Apologies to any I've missed or got the award wrong (I'm trusting wikipedia)

Tom Morris Sr, Vardon, Braid and Taylor got zilch! (different days when it seems honours weren't for "ordinary" folk and certainly not sports people however extraordinary their achievements - even W G Grace didn't get one).

Re the Ashes cricketers, Michael Vaughan got an OBE but the other Ashes winners from 2005 got MBE's.

I'm thinking IJP is in with a shout of an MBE as is Justin, (in fact I think they would be the only eligible team members, all the others are either not UK citizens or they've already got a gong).

Anyone who wants to nominate them can do so here

What about a scratch golfer who also won the doubles at Wimbledon and got Olympic gold & silver medals on the same day and scored a 147 at snooker and scored 144 not out against the MCC at Lords and played football for Chelsea and played football for Man City and played football for England and captained Britain's Davis Cup team and fought in the trenches in France during WWI and beat Charlie Chaplin at table tennis, (using a butter knife instead of a bat), before throwing Chaplin into his own pool!
Now, if anyone deserves a medal it is this man.
His name? Woosnam........................................................Maxwell Woosnam.

Okay, a bit off topic, just thought I'd mention it, puts other sportsmen into perspective though.
Oh, and he did this all as an amateur!

Slime.
