Should I change my irons

I have a set of Callaway Big Bertha reg graphite shaft the 2002/3 model, I am quite happy with them as they are very easy to hit and give a high ball flight but they are 2002, should I think about changing them to a newer set ,would a newer set help me or would I just be wasting money,it is not some thing you can just try out at the range with 6 or 7 iron.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I've always been a big fan of Callaway but have never owned a set of their irons. I find the shorter irons quite disturbing to look at (the chunky-wunkies!) and the reg graphite shafts seem far too soft, even for me with a slowish swing.

Interestingly, I have been looking at various sets of "old" model Callaways (golfbidder, ebay etc.) and have been referring to the MPF guide (now downloaded to my documents) to see which are which in regard to forgiveness.

I think you'd be hard pressed to buy a set that would give you anything as a "bonus" by going newer. If either the graphite or chunkiness is doing your head in, then maybe try a few.

My old pro (from 1990s) played with a set of o-t-s Big Berthas 1995? (S Steel) and it didn't bother him at all. I saw him hit shaped shots and super short game shots off all sorts of lies.....talent eh? got to admire it.

I have been playing for just over a year and play off about 20 my swing speed is in the low 90's, I have done 8 months of bashing the ball round the course but now trying to sort out the finer points and technical side of golf understanding why the ball does what etc etc.

if your hitting them well and you like them keep them because if you buy a different set of irons you may not be able to hit them very well. so stick with the ones you got !

My swing speed (with Driver) is low 90s too! It's an in between speed. Maybe you should try some reg steel irons.
If this speed equates to a 7 iron between 145-155, the graphites could eventually be too floppy for you....just my opinion....

In that case I'd stick with what you have. You're probably not going to gain much from the 'feel' of a club until you get more consistant striking.

I remember when I fisrt started my dad gave me some old wooden woods (old laminate rubbish) and they were awful. I was hitting badly on the range moaning about the clubs when the pro came by and smoked 4 balls in a row into the distance with the crappy 3-wood... I realised that I needed to learn to hit the ball properly before worrying about what club I was hitting :D

Your golfball probably let's you down more than the club :)
(20 handicappers rarely stick to one ball)

hope this helps :)

The BB's were designed as a game improver club and as a result were made to help get the ball in the air. If you are starting to play regularly again, there are a number of different clubs that will give you a much lower ball flight and still give you forgiveness. Have a look at Mizuno MX200 (?) as HTL has these and hits them pretty well

Thanks for advice so far guy, one thing I have found is the head is heavy and they also don't like being forced where as a steel shaft would.

If you are used to your Callaway and feel nothing uncomfortable ,you may stick to your old one .But if you want to have a fresh feeling ,i suggest you can change one .There are so many new Callaway ones on the market . Such as X-22 tour iron. It is up to yourself .Good luck !

Don't you just hate it when that happens!
My teaching pro who is 5" taller than me regularly takes one of my irons which look like tooth picks in his hands and proceeds to draw, fade high or low flight the ball right at the target.....and all from cold!!....doh!

MX 19 clubs are another set of game improvement irons. But £90 is an excellent price & in your position I might have been tempted to bite his hand off so to speak :D

Mizunu do some great irons. They might not be much of a step forward for you, but a change is as good as a rest they say.

I know you said in your first post that you are hitting your current Callaways well enough & you are happy, so on one hand you could easily stay with what you have, but that's not to say a better type of iron wouldn't help you. No guarentee & many risk quite the oposite, but for £90 quid... what the heck... go for it. Just hang onto yours until you know you are happy with the Mizuno's & if the Mizuno's were not for your several months down the line you wont looseanything as you'd easily get what you paid for a well known quality brand.

I bit the bullet and brought them yesterday and for a bit cheaper as well,I tried them today and other than some of my shots seem to be going left of the intended line I am well happy I should have gone down the range first I know but there is nothing like trying them where the need to work lol!!!.
I think I might invest in the MX200 after reading a bit of the bla bla on their web easy get my money back after a few months use, I'm not a good enough player for low handicap irons just yet.
