Should I be annoyed?

So after I asked about wedges the other day I went and tested some. Decided I liked the TW9 Wilson Staff wedges. Possibly because the rest of my stuff is Wilson Staff.

Found them cheap at clubhouse golf so decided to buy a set of 3 for £95. I got them literally 5 minutes ago and opened them to see that the 60 degree wedge has a different grip to the other two. It has got a Lamkin grip instead of the standard Wilson Staff grip. The other 2 however are the default Wilson Staff grips. I'm unable to find anything online saying that the Lamkin is another standard Wilson used grip and the ones I tested were all the default grip. I was under the impression that I was buying new gear, rather than used or repaired sticks and it wasn't disclosed to me at any point that the grip would be different.

Should I be as irritated as I am by it? The phone lines aren't open until tomorrow now so I'll see what they say but would you return it and ask for an unaltered one? Is the grip an "alternative" that Wilson use or has it more than likely been replaced at CHG?

Dont know if this any help but I bought a set of Wilson FG59 irons a couple of years ago from online golf and they came with Lamkin grips so it could be that these are grips that Wilson fit to their clubs as standard.

Worth contacting them about it if you are unhappy about the grip and it wasn't stated at the time. If Wilson do use Lamkin grips as standard then you should be ok.

You've just got a £240 RRP value for £95. I can understand that you would prefer them all to match, but to be honest, I wouldn't be that bothered. Nothing wrong with Lamkin grips.

Where do you get that you are buying used or repaired sticks from?

You are correct :P I knew what I meant in my head. Typing too fast for my own good. It was a multi-buy offer so I bought 3 at the same time.

it's also telling that they don't specify the grip in the TW9 specs, given that they have all the loft options available under the one spec - if they were the same they would probably spec it under the product spec tab (as they do for other wedges)

add in that the 'odd one' is the 60 and it points to it being a standard on that loft but not the others

Seems plausible that Wilson do use them as standard sometimes then. I just found it off that they'd use one grip for some wedges and a different one for the others and that the 60 degree I tested in store had the WS grip that's on the other wedges I got.

It's not so much that I'm unhappy with it it's more just that I'm confused by it. I'll see what they say and I'm in no way condemning the company because I know they are generally really good. I'm just worried they've had someone use it for a round then decided it's not for them or it was end of stock and the last one with a torn grip left in the corner. I've seen countless people try to get away with stuff like that in my work/people I deal with at work and it's always something that plays in my mind when buying something online.

The 60 degree is the only one that was missing bits of the plastic wrapping which got me to wondering. It's also the only one without the retail sticker on the shaft. You are quite probably correct though it really isn't worth the hassel once I'm certain it's new when they reply tomorrow.

If all 3 clubs are unmarked then what does a grip matter?

Mountain. ..mole hill.

Point taken

Just give them a call and see what they say, there is no specification on the website about which grip is supplied.
Sure they swap it or the grip for you, can't see a different grip reason for you to think the club is second hand?

Yeah maybe I am putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5. My initial thinking was if it'd brand new why would you want to change the grip. In hindsight there's a hundred different reasons for it. I'll see what they say and unless they have accidentally sent the wrong one I'll just shut up and get on with it.

No need to shut up and put if your not happy you have every right to complain. They will strive to keep you happy according to this:

Hope it's all sorted soon and you can enjoy your new shineys!

big question here, does it work? If it works for you and its a new grip, honestly do you really care, get the club out practice like hell and enjoy it.

Since I was so quick to rant and rave about the grip being different I think it's only fair that I finish the story and eat a big slice of humble pie along with it. Received an email back from CHG this morning. Very quick response in fairness, about 10 minutes after they opened for the day. The email explained that the 60 degree came from a depot in mainland Europe rather than the UK hence the different packaging/grip but is as new and shiny as the other two. Perhaps I will be a little more patient and a little less sceptical next time :o Now, where's that big ball of fire in the sky gone? Hopefully it comes back soon so I can enjoy the new shinies ;)
