Just a quick question as to if and why there is a reason behind it...

For some reason I can have the odd range session where I shank a few shots and have no idea why? in my entire time of playing golf on course I've hit 1 maybe 2 shanks in total and my normal mishit would be towards the toe...

Its not a bad position to be in as it's normally the opposite way around but it's just baffles me, I am also really crap at aiming anywhere but straight and in line with all the mats and crap that surrounds you in range bays.

Any ideas???

The only club I shank is my 52* Wedge. Not a clue why.
I think a lot of shanks happen at the range due to the lack of concentration….that and trying to smack the skin off it. :D

Your probably right mate, I usually start off well then start to feel my tempo increasing then my posture starts to get a little lazy... Roll on the summer when I can drive straight past the range

Me the same as you never on course but can do 3 or 4 on the bounce at the range.start well at range but can only do 40 minutes at a time.before a start to see how far a can smash the driver.

Could it be that the range mats and bays force you to stand square, whereas (maybe) your on-course stance is open-ish? Just a complete guess.

Were you doing this with the same clubs, if so which ones? and what's your normal pattern of your ball flight? and apart from the sh...s what tends to be the pattern of your worse mistakes?

It can be the mats if you're catching it a tiny bit heavy. The sole can then slide forwards towards the ball and bring the heel closer, whereas on grass that wouldn't happen?? Sounds plausible to me :-)

It can be from my 58 to my 4 iron... On the course my bad shot is heavy or a toe normally, my ball flight is usually a very small draw to straight, I rarely have big swinging ball flights. Maybe I just need to take time between shots more and concentrate like I would on course...

I normally start a range session with the wedges and go through the irons then the woods and back again to the wedges, and THAT'S when I shank a few . It's so annoying, I reckon I just get closer to the ball without realising and shank some until I rest for a minute or two then it's ok again. So try taking a breather and then continue, it might just be that after all on the course we only hit one or two in a row at any one time.

sorry to take so long been involved in the USGA slope handicap 'debate'. ha!
just one more question you say draw, is it a true draw a shot that definitely starts right of the ball target line and comes back to target. or does it start either on line and move left in the air, or start left and then move further left?

I get a case if the Arthur's when I don't turn through the shot properly.

Usually toward the end of a bucket when I'm getting tired or just lazy :D

Next time, try the two ball drill. just hip high swing to hip high. smooth and stay in posture making sure your right hip doesn't move out towards the ball/target line which will raise your hands and arms up and out away from you on the swing through impact.
Place a ball on the mat, then an inch away and the other side of the first ball in line with it, so looking at them they'd look like this : at address, address the ball furthest away from you, make the back swing (keep your posture) and swing through to strike the ball nearest to you.

Will give it a go thanks

its just the range. its not uncommon. I went to antree range last week. hit about 30 from 75 balls with a 5 iron. I switched to the driver just to make it stop.

my mate has stopped hitting irons at the range. he says it the root of all his problems. driver and woods only for him now!

I cant explain it, I hit 1 sh**k last summer. I've hit countless at the range in the last year.

it sucks the life from you and knocks you confidence a bit the next time you step onto a course. I cant help but laugh the first time I see the first shoot off the hossel! :fore:

Think I hit 6 in a row today at the range.....!!! :o

IMO its defo a driving range / mat issue
Im not saying ive never hit 1 on a course
But 6 today , driving range , and doubt Ive hit 6 on a course in 3 years

It's just madness isn't it, if I hit even 1 a round on average I could say there is a problem but it's just never happens  oh well at least I'm not moaning about being unable to take my range game onto the course

its weird, I can look like a complete beginner at the range then step onto the course and be myself again. I suppose I cant take my pork chop divots out of a range mat! god knows I try!

Maybe hitting a secession of balls in quick time tends to get your arms swinging more away from your body and this is what creates the Shermans.

I've stopped going to the range for a while, the last time I was there I started with my 4 iron hitting 5 with each club, hitting it perfectly, got too my pw and started shanking, no idea why, it knocked my confidence for 6, I can't remember the last time I shanked on the course. I find the range puts bad habits in me so gonna stay away for a while.

Think the timing goes if too many balls are hit in quick succession. Also trying to force it, results in J Arthurs
