He has turned pro. In my opinion I think its a schoolboy error, yes he played well in Ireland I can't deny that, but will he be able to keep that level up week in week out? I doubt it. I can understand that by turning pro he will make the best use of his two year exemption on tour but he'll miss the Walker Cup. Maybe if he had waited till after the Walker Cup he then could of turned pro whilst the season is slowing down just to give him a taste of life on the tour week after week. Rather than jump in as the summer is about to kick off.

What do you think?

definitely the right decision. He is in teh sponsors minds at the moment. He could have played the Walker Cup, but it doesn't get as much coverage as pro events.

Didn't McIlroy wait until after the Walker Cup and then got in for the last four tournaments to try and make his card. I have to say I don't think this lad is in McIlroys class and so its a safer bet for him to at least try and get top 125 plus pick up a few sponsors invites and some cash.

Delighted for the tattie howker. Look forward to following his career along with many of the other Irish players established and new.

It victory on Sunday was one of my favourite sporting events.

I will remember it like Houghtons goal against the tallys in USA 94.

With a 2 year exemption i think we should have waited until after the Walker Cup. I dont think he is as talented as McIlroy, he is talented, he was 16th in the world amateur rankings before last week he moved upto 6th earlier this week.

I wish him well, a two year exemption is a great asset to start his career, plus the Irish Sports Council gave him €20K to help with his expenses for the rest of the season.

20k toward his expenses??!! You are kidding me right?
Like he will need 20k....that should be spent better than giving it to a guy who will be swimming in enough cash now he has turned Pro,endorsements alone will have played a huge huge part in the decision to turn Pro....

Interesting point but do you no think he will get the most out of media exposure, endorsements, sponsors invites and equipment contracts now rather than after the Walker Cup when he won't be as high in the public consciousness.

Welcome to the forum by the way. Where are you from and where do you play

I think he should have waited a while, solidified his standings in the amatuer game, graced the Walker cup and then turned pro.

I can however completely see why he made this choice. On top of the inevitable financial gains that will come from his turning pro whilst in the limelight, making this decision means he has now achieved his lifelong dream. He will have taken immense confidence from his victory and will now believe he can mix it with the big boys regularly (I doubt he will be able to, but there we go!) so he has turned pro in a blaze of glory whilst feeling good about himself. To be honest despite what I said above, if I was in his position I would have done the same thing. I would have been eager to both get that first pay check, and pit my wits against Europe's best as soon as I could.

I wish him all the best in his career though, I will never be unhappy at seeing another great talent from GB&I turn pro.

Dont think endorsements will be as well paid as they may have been 2 yrs ago. plus the cost of a year on tour is out at €50---€60K.

If he's like any sane lad out there he's been dreaming of turning pro for longer than he can remember, I'll bet.

I've always thought of the Walker cup as being the pinacle of the career of some guys, but for Lowry it would only ever have been a stepping stone - he'd use it to get a decent sponsor, if you will.

But he's kinda sidestepped that by winning already, so the sponsors have been wooing him since then.

I don't see there was anything to consider.

Dont know much about the lad, infact to be honest I had never even heard of him before last week.

I wish the young lad every success and he did seem like a likeable big chap however in relation to last week he played a course known to him better than anyone else. Winning any European Tour Event as a professional or an amateur is awesome however I just dont know whether he has the game just yet to knock it round Wentworth, Valderama, etc in the same fashion that he did last week.

Good luck as I think a reality check may be comming his way, although I hope I am wrong.

Hi,
He tried to get thru Q school last year so had it in his head to turn pro last year also winning this year means he gets into a lot of big events this year i think the last world golf championship and the open.

Plus its not just a fluke - he has won all the BIG titles as an amateur not inc the Walker Cup - from what I gather from a few conversations at the club without scratch men and folk who know a lot about the movements in the armatures, Shane is champion material - most put him on par with Rory McIlroy.

After watching him it took a while to win perhaps some of the very best names he would not have been afforded the 3 plyoffs, but he won and he is capable of more
