The new British passport is to be made in.........France.
You couldn't make it up
You couldn't make it up
sacré bleu!
Would you rather pay an extra £20 or £25 every time you renew your passport just so that it can be made in the UK? Surely the government has a duty to get the best deal possible.
And I did see that the "British" firm complaining about losing there contract to produce the passport has been printing them in Malta for the last 7 or 8 years so it's hardly a new thing.
Apparently the UK company's quote was £120m more than the French quote. Sounds like the government made the right choice with everyone's tax money.
Well, yes...
However, if I really felt others were 'playing' to 'the rules' I'd be a whole lot more comfortable, about spending decisions taken by Westminster, in the whole...
Listening to the minister responsible he reminded the interviewer that we have not yet left the EU so we have to abide by EU competition rules on tenders. ie we are not allowed to favour our own industries without a justifiable reason.

The French have the same French company produce theirs and no one else under claims of national security.Listening to the minister responsible he reminded the interviewer that we have not yet left the EU so we have to abide by EU competition rules on tenders. ie we are not allowed to favour our own industries without a justifiable reason.

Since the country is going to detach itself from the EU, so what if the British version costs more.....the Government will get back more in corporation tax, income tax and NI as result of the work staying in the UK. Plus we would have a greater security control over the highly valuable blanks, no one is going to be more watchful of the fresh blanks than our own nationals.
Malta is used as a backup, Gateshead is the current location they are produced.
The Country voted them in......TADA !!!! The tories can clear off. They a disgrace!

How's about we waited until we exited the EU before we actually gave a contract too " .
However don't the same British firm make passports for 50 other countries?
Swings and roundabouts methinks.
