Seriously?

Would you rather pay an extra £20 or £25 every time you renew your passport just so that it can be made in the UK? Surely the government has a duty to get the best deal possible.

And I did see that the "British" firm complaining about losing there contract to produce the passport has been printing them in Malta for the last 7 or 8 years so it's hardly a new thing.

Apparently the UK company's quote was £120m more than the French quote. Sounds like the government made the right choice with everyone's tax money.

Well, yes...

However, if I really felt others were 'playing' to 'the rules' I'd be a whole lot more comfortable, about spending decisions taken by Westminster, in the whole...

Listening to the minister responsible he reminded the interviewer that we have not yet left the EU so we have to abide by EU competition rules on tenders. ie we are not allowed to favour our own industries without a justifiable reason.

I try to keep my paranoia in a box until there's hard evidence.

Is the right answer.

If some of our industries were more competitive, and didn't expect 'favours,' maybe they'd win more business.

We will continue to abide by EU competition rules if we want any sort of decent trade deal, I would assume.

Our old passport wasn't even the colour of blue being proposed. Utter nonsense over the passport colour...

And some Brexiters are raging and Priti Patel tells us "It is a national humiliation"

Blue passports and fishing rights - yup - that's all that really seems to matter to some - symbols. What a farce - would be funny if Bexit wasn't so serious.

The French have the same French company produce theirs and no one else under claims of national security.

Since the country is going to detach itself from the EU, so what if the British version costs more.....the Government will get back more in corporation tax, income tax and NI as result of the work staying in the UK. Plus we would have a greater security control over the highly valuable blanks, no one is going to be more watchful of the fresh blanks than our own nationals.

Malta is used as a backup, Gateshead is the current location they are produced.

TADA !!!! The tories can clear off. They a disgrace!

Today the Daily Mail (spit) rages about the elite hating the country, our history, culture and our identity as a nation and peoples by this decision to take the contract for printing our passport away from De La Rue.

And it's readers will lap up this rubbish and have their emotions and thinking further manipulated and hardened against the EU...it's utterly shocking. That 'liesheet' of rag is treating it's readers as if they are stupid - because of course it won't remind them of their front page headline of 12th December 2010...

Fury over switch to make British passports abroad... at increased cost of £100m

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...d-costing-100-jobs-100-million-taxpayers.html

...and even looking at De La Rue - they don't mention that that De La Rue prints passports for 40 other countries - all who by Daily Mail implication have governments who similarly hate their people and the history of their nation as they don't have their passports printed 'in country'...really...?

This comment is not aimed at your comment, but the plank minister who said we have to abide by the EU rules. How's about we waited until we exited the EU before we actually gave a contract too " whoever". If the froggies were the cheapest then there the cheapest. If not then a UK company it is.
Ironically for me it blows a massive hole in the arguement that no one will want to do business with us once we have left th EU. Am positive that when it comes to £,$,€ or whatever your currency is. Business will still carry on and principles will be put to one side.
Having said all that, Personally I think it stinks the contract has gone abroad.

However don't the same British firm make passports for 50 other countries?
Swings and roundabouts methinks.

They do. However it's bad news for Manchester and Gateshead factories as they only produce and assemble the UK passport currently. Whether they can move production of other passports over there remains to be seen due to logistical costs
