Senior Captains

One of the problems with "senior sections" such as this, i.e. societies, is in determining eligibility for competitions and matches; for example, are the senior club championship, knockout/league team be open to all club members over 55 or restricted to members of the seniors society? Of course, there should be proper ToCs, but there often aren't.
That's why our club changed to all are automatically included once age 55.

As you said, the membership route automatically controlled numbers. How is that managed now?
We have ~300 over 55s, but only ~125 join the seniors society with about half playing any given competition. If you're profile is anything like ours, merging into the club proper means a big increase in eligible players who might be looking to play in the senior comps. Even if only a couple 20-30 take up the opportunity, that's still a significant chunk of additional tee times needed (assuming reserved tee times).

Imo, it's pretty simple. If it's the Senior Club Championship, all club members of 55 and older are eligible to enter. It's different if it's the Senior Society Championship.

One might have thought - but we've learned that nothing is that simple, even with the Senior Club Championship, which has discussed several times over recent years.
Someone once suggested that since the Monday tee times were reserved for the seniors section, only members of that section could play anyway, so the question is moot.

There are also many other comps & team matches that raise the same eligibility question.

Opening seniors comps and matches up to all over 55 has not made much difference in terms of participation. They are all on weekdays. Comps are mainly Thursday morning and matches any weekday.
Mainly, if not all, it is the retired geezers participating.
Secretary used to have a list of those who has paid £5 to send emails to.
His list is huge now and has to send to all. Must be a nuisance for some recipients. They have been thinking about opt-ins and opt-outs - I don't know the trials/outcomes of all this admin.

The Seniors used to be more of a society/clique in our club and you had to pay a nominal annual charge if you wanted to play in their comps and more if you wanted to be eligible for their matches. This has now changed as all male 55+ can now play in their matches or comps. They have also reduced teh ridiculous amount of matches (used to be 40 or more fixtures). The only reserved tee times are for their Club Championship or matches, all other comps are done on a roll up basis. It has been a great change and improvement in the past few years.
In another local club one of the women (aged 5v+) signed up for a Seniors match as she noted that all their constitution didn’t specify gender. They now have women playing in their teams (to the surprise of the opposition) and in their comps - apparently it works well.
