I am planning to do a golf trip to Scotland for my stag do next summer. There is four of us and we are looking at four rounds of golf over four days. My initial thoughts are to fly into the North of Scotland and get a hire car. We would like to end up in Edinburgh for the last night for a few drinks. I know its a while away but I am playing Woburn with the same guys in a few weeks so I would like to have some rough ideas to put to them. As a guide I do not want to play all links courses as they are not my preference and ideally only two of the rounds would be £100+ green fees. Over to you guys

TBH, if you don't want to play links golf i would not bother coming to the North of Scotland, the best courses are Links. there are Ok parkland courses don't get me wrong, but i would not come all this way to play them.

One that is a must play course if you are coming all this way is Royal Dornoch, its top 10 UK and was recently voted top 20 world.

Then one of the other local links courses, like Tain, Brora, Fortrose, Moray. all of these would be well under £100.

then the only two parkland courses i would play would be;

Boat of Garten and Spey valley, again both well under £100.

Stay In Inverness, a great night out with plenty of Bars, Restaurants and clubs on offer

Happy to play links courses I just don't want to play 4 links courses. 3 would be fine.

Nonsense, Royal Dornoch is one of the best links in Britain. Go south to Aberdeen, down into the Kingdom then over the bridge into East Lothian.

Sounds like a good trip.

Rick Shiels and Peter Finch did a video for the Pin Seekerz final up in St Andrews. I think they played the Duke's Course. Heathland. Looked a belter. And different from the links courses up there.

Royal Dornoch is a must if you came to the highlands, its about 50 miles from Inverness up the A9 and takes about 50 mins. you have to go past Tain to get to it and Fortrose is about 20 mins from the center of Inverness. If its a stag you will want to base your self here, nowhere else has anything like the nightlife. then pop down to Aviemore for a night, play BOG and Spey, head to Edinburgh after 4 hours at most.

Personally I'd look at either St Andrews and use The Dukes as your "non links" course, or stay in Edinburgh and travel out to East Lothian coast each day.

If you go for St Andrews then you can save money on not needing a hire car (train to Luchars), plus depending on where you stay you can all get pie eyed the night before and not be worried about being over the limit driving to a course as they are in walking distance.

Then just sort out final night stay in Edinburgh.

not a bad shout, You can't go wrong with the new and the jubilee, plus deals to be had on the dukes. nightlife was a bit quite though

Personally I'd either do a North of Scotland trip or a central Scotland one especially if you are planning to fly up.

Why not just base yourselves in Edinburgh? Day trips out to East Lothian for your links courses (Gullane, North Berwick etc) and good parkland options on offer at decent prices too (Duddingston, Mortonhall etc). All the nightlife you could wish for on your doorstep and easy transport links. Watch out for Edinburgh in August though - then is festival time and accommodation is impossible to find and expensive.

Or base yourself in Glasgow in a similar style - links course down in Ayrshire are pretty close by (Dundonald and Glasgow Gailes won't break the bank) and parkland options in town. Probably more nightlife than you want on tap all over the city.

St Andrews ticks all the boxes too but will be expensive in the summer for accommodation (although they now have a premier inn which might help a little) I'd echo the 'quiet' comment about the nightlife though, especially as all the students are gone at that time.

To be honest if you base yourself in Edinburgh, Inverness, Glasgow, St Andrews or Aberdeen you'll be spoilt for fantastic golf options nearby so it comes down to the priorities between partying and golf.

The biggest danger I see is planning too much travelling around - but maybe that is just me, why spend 4 hours in a car when you could be on some of the finest courses in the world instead ?

I'm sure you'll have a great trip wherever you decide.

If you aren't bothered about links courses, why travel all the way up to Scotland? In the Midlands area you have some great inland tracks. Beau Desert, Sherwood Forest, Notts, Coxmoor, Enville, Woodhall Spa etc etc.

Nottingham is a lively place for a night out (Hooters!!) or another alternative is the Leeds area?

Plenty in the highlands. Boat, Spey Valley, Granton on Spey, Kingussie, Inverness, Strathpeffer, Newtonmore.

Plenty to choose from before you even consider the links in the area.

Most are Good but if you want you want parkland you are better staying in the central belt because there is nothing better north of Perth and don't say BlairG as its not Parkland

Not sure I'd call any of the courses I mentioned parkland but all beautiful courses in their own right.

I'm interested to know what you rate as a great parkland course in the central belt? Haggs Castle potentially?
