i am planning to spend my next summer holiday together with my better half in scotland ( 2 weeks july 2013). question to the scots amongst the forum members: what are the must-sees, must-visits other than golf. i am asking now because i have to book the flights accordingly (to glasgow, edinburgh or aberdeen). we are interested in scenic walks, drives, gardens and ancient monuments (ruins, castles, etc.)
yes, we will play 4 or 5 rounds of golf as well, difficult to fit all in 2 weeks, i know

Jeez, plenty of options! Highlands and Perthshire for walks and plenty of ruins etc, also Argyll & Bute has both.I really couldn't say what would be the best option as there are that many!

As an aside Bernix I saw a video online yesterday about a golf week in Kitzbuhel and the courses looked amazing, have you played much around this area and if so do you think a trip there may be an option for guys? Cheap flights go from Edinburgh to Munich and I am guessing that it would be an easy and nice drive from there?

i am at kitzbuehel every year during the bridge week which is march/april while golf courses are still closed hence i cant judge them. what i can tell you is that the region is quite pricey. i'd prefer zell am see (salzburg) or carinthia for a week with the boys. special tip: waldviertel, a little remote (nearest airport prague) but excellent value and really scenic golf courses.

Bernix.
Without going too far north Argyll [Arochar and Inverary] and around Pitlochry is best for scenery, Mull [Tobermory] for wildlife.
Glasgow & Edinburgh city centres are great for shopping and nightlife.
Castles Edinburgh, Stirling, Culzean in Ayrshire, Dunotter near Aberdeen.
Central belt [Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling/Perth] is very easy to drive around, so long as you remember to stay on the left!!.

July can be a wet month so bring waterproofs. Weather is so unpredictable so be prepared. Sunblock to wellies.

Residing, as I do, in Aberdeen - I do feel that we are not geared up for the tourist trade.

The spine of Scotland - Edinburgh, Perth and Inverness offer the tourist the best of the Country and is easy travelled.

Plenty of what you are looking for and a wee bit more!

Highlands for some of it.

Loch Ness, Mountains, Castles, Walks, Beaches, Wildlife and Whisky .

Plus for golf you have Royal Dornoch, Nairn and Castle Stuart, along with quite a few hidden gems as well.

If this is your first trip to Scotland there is a long standing tradition that when a visitor enters a bar for the first time he buys a drink for all of the ginger haired people inside.
