I love the look of Scoresaver2, and would love to use it this year, but I use a Mac.

After years of hassle with PC's, and watching them slowly grind to a halt, I love my Mac, and whilst I know its possible to run windows on it, I dont particularly want to.

Are there any techies on here that can tell me, in simple terms, how best to find a solution to the little problem ?

Thx

Thx Homer, I did, and Andy says that they wont be doing a Mac version unfortunately.

They suggest using a program that lets you install Windows on your Mac, (if I understand it correctly), and then using that, run SS2 on Windows etc.

However, having a Mac which works quietly, quickly, reliably, I'm a little nervous about going anywhere near Windoze again,......EVER.

i am a mac user and have have parallels (the program that runs windows in the background).

There is no risk of ruining your mac completely, as windows is partitioned off on the hard drive and formatted as fat32(file path), whereas the mac section is NTFS.

Because of the difference in file paths, windows viruses cannot and will not affect the mac section of the hard drive as they are written for fat32, not NTFS - but they may ruin the section of your hard drive dedicated to running windows.

I hope that helps, sorry if it makes no sense.

Chris,

Further to our earlier emails and PMs, the reasons that we won't be doing a Mac version are purely technical. Scoresaver 2 is written using CodeGear Delphi (it rocks !), which is Windows only.

The methods for running a dual-boot system on your Mac, so you can effectively have a Windows machine as well, are well documented. The one drawback is that you'll need to pay for a Windows license.

Hi Andy,

I understand your reasons for not producing Mac version, as well as the fact that Mac users are undoubtably in a minority too.

Ive also got access to Windoze, which is on my kids laptops anyway, but whether I want it anywhere near my perfectly performing Mac is another issue. :)

I'd better read up on the matter further.
Cheers.

Chris,
welcome to my world.

Ive had this out with SS2 in the past (and was probably a bit @rsy about it at the time - for which I humbly apologise SS2)

if you've got a processor that can run a second Wondows OS such as one of the new generation of Intel duo core macs then I can't see it being a problem. Mac will just treat it as another application and 'bomb' it early if it looks like causing trouble (or you can always force quit). It's not a particularly graphic or processor intensive app. (unlike something like WOW) so shouldn't be a problem.

There's always the option of running Windows off a partition of a removable firewire drive that way if it corrupts the hard drive space it won't affect your main system if youre worried about it. Slower due to the extra bus involved but as said it's not gonna make a mac made in the last two years puff too much.

For those of us still soldiering on with the old Motorola chips (although I love this Mac and it's never let me down I want a machine that can run Civ4 and the upcoming Starcraft2)- the option that someone on here pointed to me was this:-

http://www.stats4golf.com/

free. online based and does many of the most important things without some of the bangs and whistles of Stroke saver

I think you strike a deal when you buy into Macs. You're going to get a machine that will never let you down and will last until you've had enough of it (mine is 5 years old a bought DOA repaired from Apple online) and will strike a good balance between form and function.

The downside is and undoubtably remain software. Always has been and always will be. With only 5% of global market share it just doesn't make sense for a company to write for OSX (even though they are disproportionately vocal- ahem) unless it a real big mainstream software house such Adobe or Microsoft.

That's the deal and one I'm happy to accept despite it being occasionally frustrating.

Happy hunting

Bill

I was just looking at the SS2 website and the screen shots do look a tad confusing, I currently use Golfshakes basic package and can see the dashboard of % of GIR, FIR and putts and it seems fine. Just a couple of questions: -

-Does SS2 work with a GPS unit, like to download your round stats or is this a case of manual recording and updating later?

-It states free updates until 2010, does this mean that after then I have to pay for upgrades though bought the SS2 package?

Parmo:

1. No, at present Scoresaver 2 does not work with a GPS unit

2. If you buy SS2, you get to use it for life without further payment. All upgrades to Scoresaver 2 that we release will be free of charge to owners of Scoresaver 2. When we bring out Scoresaver 3 we will offer Scoresaver 2 customers a discount but.. there will be no requirement to upgrade and no commitment to further cost. I can tell you now that Scoresaver 3 will not be appearing before 2011.

Golfshake is a fine and very popular website and has been around for years. Their basic, free membership is quite sufficient for many golfers.

Thx Billyg, appears i'm no alone :)

It is a conundrum, and agree that its a trade off using a Mac, but one that I happily accept in return for IT that works :D

I think I'll dig a bit more in readiness for the season start, which is hardly too near sadly.

If it wasn't for the fact that Scoresaver and all the other software that we produce is designed for Windows, I'd dump our PCs tomorrow. Overcomplicated, protectionist Microsh*te software.

Andy,

Do I not get any sort of sales incentive after all this trade I've passed on to you??? :)

As I see it, the "HJS Seal Of Approval" brand is now carrying serious weight thanks to its association with quality products. You could always capitalise on this and float yourself on the London Stock Exchange ? :D
