Surely if there is nobody around to hear you say “provisional” you are not playing in a comp so you can do what the hell you want anyway.

You could have walked back to the tee after loosing a ball so your playing partners are up the fairway.Surely if there is nobody around to hear you say “provisional” you are not playing in a comp so you can do what the hell you want anyway.
You play what is your third shot from the tee, but you are unsure as to where it has finished and thus choose to hit a provisional.
The ball is a provisional as you intended it to be so.
If you fail to inform your playing partner, when you have the opportunity to do so, that you have played a provisional, the intended provisional becomes the ball in play.
