I have a standard set of off-the-peg irons, and during my first round of the season noticed difficulties from within 50 yards of the green.

I have been using the SW to pitch, but too often the ball goes too far (and not high enough) and overshoots the green. Little chips from 20 yards with a putting motion aren't too bad, but from 20-50 yards I'm struggling.

This could be because:

1) I'm 6 foot 6 and the SW is a standard length...
2) The SW has too much 'bounce' for hitting off the fairway?

Would you guys recommend getting the SW extended and carry on using it? Using the PW instead but not on a full swing? Buying a club designed with little bounce for this purpose?

Thanks for your help! If needed, I can post a photo of the SW. It's quite thick underneath.

Cheers.

:)

The thckness you refer to isnt really the problem, all sandwedges need quite a wide base (sole) to help it get through the sand. The bounce (curvature of the base) is what is more important, less bounce (flatter) is good for fairways and tight lies but for bunkers it acts like a brake as the sole is not helping it back out of the sand.
Try playing the ball a little further back in your stance, that way you should be hitting the ball just before the turf instead of the wedge rebounding off the turf onto the ball which would actually make it a little thin and gives the extra horrible distance on finesse shots.

As has been said before on the forum you will need wedges that fit in between your sand and pitching wedge wether its 52 54 58 60 whatever suits your distance, its also important that the bounce suits the courses you play ie-the tighter the fairways the less bounce you will need. Then its practice and more practice until your comfortable with the distance your trying to play.

I would imagine at 6 6 you should be looking at a custom fit, but I would be suprised if it only affected your SW

Have had the 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 irons extended by 2 inches. The 3h and 4h are ok length wise. I expect that I'll need to get the PW and SW done as well, and possibly add another wedge to the collection.
