Ryder Cup future, slightly tongue in cheek

Its fine the way it is,if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I can see them getting a tad sour grapes about it though because they're bad losers to say the least.

I was listening on radio 5 live and a caller phoned up afterwards saying he was walking wherever it was when he struck a conversation with one of the American caddies and he said its all the captains fault,he's a dick!!!

Who's a dick, the caller, the caddie or the captain?

Was great to see Reed showing a bit of dig and emotion today, do the Americans have a Seve like Captain sitting on the wings? I would personally go for Fred Couples.

I think they need more of a cold clinical ruthless Langer type captain. I don't think the emotion and will to win are lacking from the US, but more of the tactical acumen.

Apparently several calls for Azinger already. Been said he managed a good team atmosphere last time out. Although I feel the whole captain thing can be over played - the golfers hit the shots.

Sometimes we maybe should remember why they call it the "miracle in Medinah", it was down to a gnat's whisker, and arguably Colin M was pretty lucky the time before when the format had to change. I do agree though that a big defeat stateside next time out could have an effect.

When they introduced the President's Cup, I did think it was smart move, as the US would gain more experience at this kind of format and would not really have many "rookies" any more. Has not really panned out as I thought. Maybe some statto could say how many on each team today were under 25? Maybe the future is better for them?

It may be tongue in cheek but another away win or 2 and US interest could drop significantly.

I was thinking that earlier and I also wondered if the Ryder Cup could be 'cheapened' somewhat by lapses in 'protocol' (think closing ceremony and soccer style celebrations... I wonder if they'd have shouldered Tom Watson and drowned him in champagne?) thereby making people not care if they make it into the team or not. That said I don't think you'd skip it if you happened to qualify for it in the order of merit... but it might just turn into and 'end of season jolly-up'.

I think USA are in a bit of a vicious circle. Look at the acrimony of their press conference and undoubted recriminations. Combine that with the fact that they almost always lose and I imagine lots of their players are starting to dread playing in the Ryder cup. Contrast that with the Europeans.... They get together, play golf, have a great time, get to pick up a trophy at the end and are lauded as heroes. They can't wait for the next one!

the biggest problem could be the american tv networks, golf is way down on their list to televise

The golf coverage is superb out here. You have the NBC GolfHD channel that shows 24/7 golf. The last week has just been solid Ryder Cup showing practice rounds etc, all the PGA Tour coverage too. You get things like the big break also which I enjoy watching. No other channel has it as a priority as NBC own all the rights. Bit like BBC having it as a low priority because SKY owns it all.

What I don't understand is we have to use the American pictures when its in the US but you gave the impression you were watching different coverage. Is that right?

It felt that way, they appeared to show a lot if the Americans and not the Europeans. Probably using the same cameras, just a different production staff, so they are sending back what they want to show.

That's exactly what I think happens.

Same with tournaments like PGA at Wentworth - there's only 1 set of cameras but 2 production teams - BBC and Sky.

I love it that the Americans think Azinger is the answer. He was captain against Faldo. It wasn't hard to win! My cat could have got a win.

If there was a $10m+ prize they'd play better and the USA viewers would want to watch.

If they loose again they'll change the format or to make sure they will cut down trees, fill in bunkers and mow all the rough to keep their long hitters on the fairways.

Not that it will ever go back to the original format. But would the yanks have done better against 12 picked from GB&I?
I was thinking about that. Depending on how you would base qualification, you would probably end up with a GB & I team of
Mcilroy
Rose
McDowell
Donaldson
Donald
Poulter
Westwood
Casey
Gallacher
And Captains picks from say Lowry, Warren, Fleetwood, Willet and Dyson.
Not quite as enthralling without the likes of Garcia, Dubuisson, Bjorn, Kaymer and Stenson and shows just how much better the Ryder Cup is since the Europeans came in. Nevertheless, GB & I may have given the US a good game, especially if the team numbers were reduced to say, 10.
Of course, we all know this is nonsense. The Americans will come back and come back strong. You only have to look at the 2013 and 2014 tour rookies to realise what a strong team they will be able to put out in the next few years. I may be wrong, but I don't think Europe has as many young stars in the making.

Just seen Mickleson on SSN being ultra critical. Very disappointing to be that vocal publicly that soon after the final putt dropped and surely something that could have been discussed behind closed doors first
On the one hand his timing showed a bit of a lack of class but on the other, what better time to raise an important point when you have the world's golfing press hanging on your every word? I imagine they've discussed why they keep losing 'behind closed doors' after every defeat in the last 20 years and what good has it done them?
