Ryan Giggs

Nah, there are plenty:

Pep
Cruyff
Ancelotti
Dalglish
Clough
Keegan
Heynckes
Laudrup
Capello
Koeman
Rijkaard
Simeone
Beckenbauer

Obviously there are going to be quite a few that don't make it as top managers, but there are plenty of world class players who have gone on to become top managers.

Souness?

There will always be exceptions but I think on average the original bod is correct the better managers were average players

I think you are looking at it the wrong way round....

There are not many top players! nd not many of those really consider management!

There are a vast number of average/not particularly good players and quit a few of those decide to go down the management route. And they tend to start (managing) a lot earlier than top players, who keep playing s they are still top players!!

So it's really just a statistics/numbers game!

Having decided to go into management, Giggs could well be quite good at it - or pretty dire! H'e certainly jumping in at the deep end with ManU and/or Celtic.

Mark Hughes has turned into quite a capable manager, having been a pretty good, if not outstanding, player!

He could be good, he could be *****. Time will tell i suppose.

Managing well at Celtic doesnt really make you a good manager nowadays though...

Odd choice if it does come off as sort of a no win situation, expected to win everything and if he doesn't win the treble = failure.

European experience won't be too much these days with Celtic, couple of qualifying rounds against diddy teams not going to sharpen him up for the Utd job and the SPL isn't exactly going to stretch his tactical ability given the financial advantage Celtic have over the other dross (including my own team!!) in there.

Although my dross team have just taken the lead against them :whoo:

To be fair, he's served his apprenticeship under a couple of top managers (and Moyes) and so should know a thing or two by now. A high profile club like Celtic is a big place for the first job, but surely it's better than United, where he'd be on a hiding to nothing from day one

I always think a manager should have a presence about them. Giggs doesn't have that for me.......maybe he is different behind closed doors.

Don't wish to be rude to anyone, but I remember in the past there was great clamour for us in England to be able to watch the Old Firm on Sky, and the Scottish FA Cup Final was also of interest.

Rangers v Leeds and Celtic v Liverpool in the Champions League were BIG deals, as were Aberdeen's adventures in the European Cup back in the day.

Now, frankly, I don't know anyone who cares about Scottish football. It's a non-entity for anyone not directly attached to it.

Don`t agree with Dogleish,
good player, but never a top manager,

Never a top manager, if he was he'd still be at it.

You are correct, for some strange reason what is left of my mind thought he won the top league in England with Blackburn and Liverpool. Put that with his 3 Old Rangers league titles and that would have been quite unique.
BUT I checked and it was only the Diddy cup and the EFA cup. I never really rated him either:lol:

Well done the Dandy Dons. My team will do well to finish 3rd now that they have cashed in on Osman Sow. £1.5m for 4 months left on a contract was probably too good to turn down. Hearts reserve team player Billy King off to New Rangers on loan, I am sure there is a joke in there somewhere.

At Liverpool he was (2 games away from winning 3 doubles), won the league with Blackburn. Finished 2nd with Newcastle and got them to a cup final.

Eventually dipped with Newcastle and didnt do it at Celtic, for balance.
