Ruling confirmation please

I did intervene on the course by telling them on the 6th hole. Have I penalised them and taken away their first prize? No, because I cannot guarantee that the second or third placed teams didn't do the same.

And therein lies the problem. Unless you can get someone to watch every group how can you just penalise those you saw and not the others. I'm sad to say that as each group is a team I doubt very much that unless there is a referee on each hole whther they'd be worried about not looking at the line etc. Even for a "competitive" club (not sure I'd like to be at a win at all cost - within the rules obviously environment) a scramble should really be seen as a bit of fun. We have them and there are prizes on offer but no-one gets overly excited. The prizes aren't huge and there certainly isn't a gold letter event for any of them. It's more about a social 9 or 18 holes and some food afterwards. Good way of getting some funds into the club and for the men, women and juniors to play together instead of their own cliques

Like some else said a scramble breaks all the normal rules of golf, as it played as a team, players ask each other what club they have hit, if they are short off the green or long.

Played one at the end of last year and one of our group wondered if we were allowed to stand on the putting line. I said "not officially , but have a look around at all the other greens and you can see the gaggle of people doing exactly this thing". It's a social format and only those who have a serious competitive streak are bothered about the outcome.

I play this format because its the prelude to our prize presentation and for no other reason.

Errr...quite easily, I would have thought. If you see one of your group break the rules in a competition, you penalise them. You can hardly let them off on the grounds that some other people might have done the same thing without being penalised. How would anyone ever be penalised for anything in that case?!

Absolutely correct.
How can you penalise a team for a supposed rules infringement on the green when they have most probably broken rule after rule whilst walking down the fairway?
:D

But as a team...4 somes, greensomes, 4bbb etc, I thought you were allowed to confir with your partner about club selection, putting line etc.

I think you can confer on line etc, but you can't stand directly on the line of the putt during the shot,

I play a few of these each year and it is a good bit of fun, and can get quite interesting, everyone I have played with in these always stands in a position to see the putt.
Although you shouldnt, people do, I guess that if it were a more serious game people wouldn't, but I dont think people actually know they shouldn't!

:D :D
