You're about to hit your drive, you've addressed the ball and you're about to start your backswing. Just then, you touch the ball by mistake and it falls off the tee.
Is there a penalty or do you just replace it on the tee?

I believe you just replace it on the tee in this instance as there was no stroke played with the intent of striking the ball

Surely starting your backswing indicates intent?

Not trying to sound a dick or sarcastic here but you don't hit the ball on the backswing, my understanding was that accidentally nudging the ball from the tee means you simply re tee it. I really hope so as I do it about 5 times a round :D

Just looked on "golf rules made easy site". Its says if you knock the ball off the tee as you address the ball. re-tee without penalty. Also if you hit the ball on you practice swing and it falls off the tee replace with no penalty. As a practice swing is not deemed to be a stroke and the ball is not in play before a stroke is made on the teeing box.

How can there be no intent to hit the ball if you have addressed/taken your stance?

After you have addressed the ball what are you intending to do?

I agree that it should be re-tee'd without penalty but surely addressing the ball in preperation to start your backswing indicates an intent to hit the ball?!?

If this is the case surely the same should apply on the putting green when the wind moves the ball after you have replaced your ball, removed your marker and addressed it!?! It's still unintentional but this incurs a penalty?

The ball is not in play on any particular hole until you have made a "stroke" at it on the tee. Therefore any accidental movement before a stroke is made is not penalised. Once you have made that 1st stroke, then the ball remains in play until holed. The ball is still in play if moved on the green as you described, so a penalty.

Simples :D :D

The difference being that your ball on the putting green is in play, a ball on the tee is not in play until a stroke has been made.

Cheers my Leftie

I knew someone would clear that up for me!!

there was a exeption i wasn't aware of

.you tee your ball, you hit it out of bounds
.you reload
.then you knock the ball of the tee by mistake.

my club pro said 'its a one stroke penalty becausde the hole has begun to be played and you've moved the ball with the club''

The fact you had hit a ball, it was in play. So the fact it when OB the second ball was in play as soon as you placed it on the tee.
